Caring for the hills protects us from flooding, says peer reviewed, open access research

New research by the University of Manchester and Moors for the Future Partnership details the findings of the Making Space for Water project. It is published in the Journal of Hydrology X. The research shows that flood control can now be added to the many benefits of restoring damaged peatlands. The paper is peer reviewed and open access, which is hugely important if knowledge and expertise is to be shared and built upon. This work is continuing through our new Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded project, Protect-NFM

A big bog season: quarterly conservation update

This winter is on track to be our biggest ever season for conservation works. There’s still much to do, but have a look at the numbers already achieved in the last quarter of 2018.

Dipwells are done...until next year

The 8^th annual dipwell campaign came to an end in the week before Christmas. 30 volunteers took part in the monitoring across nine moors from Turley Holes, near Todmorden to Kinder Scout. Each moor has several clusters of dipwells and in total over 8000 measurements were taken between October and December!

Our year in review out now

Our annual report for the year ending April 2018 is now available to read online and is packed with stories that give a flavour of the work completed by the Partnership. The look back includes a tale of an innovative project using two disused Peak District reservoirs to create a prototype sphagnum moss factory, and an account of establishing new field labs to add to our ever growing research and monitoring programme.

A peatland-tailored User Guide on methods to value benefits from restoration

We've helped to develop a guide for peatland restoration practitioners and anyone interested in peatlands to value the socio-economic benefits of their restoration. The ‘User Guide’ was developed as part of the Yorkshire integrated Catchment Solutions Programme (iCASP) together with Yorkshire Peat Partnership (YPP) and the University of Leeds.
