Caring for the hills protects us from flooding, says peer reviewed, open access research

New research by the University of Manchester and Moors for the Future Partnership details the findings of the Making Space for Water project. It is published in the Journal of Hydrology X. The research shows that flood control can now be added to the many benefits of restoring damaged peatlands.  The paper is peer reviewed and open access, which is hugely important if knowledge and expertise is to be shared and built upon. This work is continuing through our new Natural Environment Research Council  (NERC) funded project, Protect-NFM

The 8th annual dipwell campaign came to an end in the week before Christmas.  30 volunteers took part in the monitoring across nine moors from Turley Holes, near Todmorden to Kinder Scout.  Each moor has several clusters of dipwells and in total over 8000 measurements were taken between October and December!

A peatland-tailored User Guide on methods to value benefits from restoration

We've helped to develop a guide for peatland restoration practitioners and anyone interested in peatlands to value the socio-economic benefits of their restoration. The ‘User Guide’ was developed as part of the Yorkshire integrated Catchment Solutions Programme (iCASP) together with Yorkshire Peat Partnership (YPP) and the University of Leeds.
