Register for ICORD's Annual Research Meeting

We're looking forward to another day and a half of exciting research at our Annual Research Meeting this March 6 and 7. Our meeting starts in the late afternoon of March 6 with our first plenary talk (by Dr. Amy Latimer from Queens, who will talk about knowledge translation and disability), followed by our first poster session and opening reception. On March 7 we will have a full day with research talks, lunch, and our second poster session, followed by the presentation of poster awards at the end.

If you want to participate in the annual research meeting, you must register.

This applies to all faculty, staff, and trainees from ICORD and partner institutions. ICORD admin staff will only register visiting speakers. If you are not a visiting speaker, please register yourself. It's easy: just click on the button below to go to our registration page. The password is ICORDARM2019.

New paper in Neurology

Congratulations to Tom Nightingale, Matthias Walter, Ali Williams, Tania Lam, and Andrei Krassioukov, on the recent publication of their paper Ergogenic effects of an epidural neuroprosthesis in one individual with spinal cord injury in the high-impact journal Neurology.

Meet some new people, make some connections

The next D.R.I.N.K.S. (Discussions Relevant to Inspiring New Knowledge & Science) social will happen TOMORROW (January 18) from 4 to 7pm at Mahoney's Stamps Landing. The purpose (if you need an excuse to stay a little later!) is to bring together faculty, clinicians, scientists, residents, trainees, staff, entrepreneurs, bio/pharm staff/execs/veterans, lawyers, VCs, journalists/editors, sabbaticals, and others with common interests in biomedical/translational research & discovery/commercialization once a month to casually interact and meet new people over a beverage of their choice and/or appie. It's also becoming a great way for people who have just moved to or are visiting Vancouver, or looking for collaborations, jobs, networking/socializing, to meet others in research/biomedical field/industry.
Future dates: Feb 22, Mar 28, Apr 18, 4-7pm
All are welcome to sign up for the LinkedIn page

Meet Maya Sato-Klemm, Work Learn student in the Human Locomotion Lab

Where are you from / how did you end up in Vancouver? I was born in Vancouver, as were both my parents, but my grandparents from my dad’s side are from Germany and from my mom’s side, Japan.
Describe your job/what you do in the BSCC in three sentences or less. I have a Work Learn Position in the Lam Lab as a research assistant.
What’s your favourite thing about your job / research? I love how my work involves applying knowledge that I have learnt from my courses at UBC. I also love that I learn new things every time I come in to work.
What do you like to do when you’re not working? When not working or studying, I usually find myself spending time with my family.
What’s your superpower? I can sleep literally anywhere at any time.
What’s the best book you’ve read, or show you’ve seen lately? I’m currently reading The Color Purple, and so far it has been an amazing book!!
If you could have dinner with any scientist or clinician in history, who would it be and why (and where would you go to eat)? I would get sushi with Rosalind Franklin because I feel like her work was discredited due to sexism and that this would lead to a very passionate conversation, not only about her work on DNA but also about society's discrepancies.

Volunteer to be profiled! Or nominate someone. You don't even have to know them (that's the whole point of this column!) Send ideas to Cheryl.

Vancouver Cantata Singers presents

Musica Universalis

Saturday February 23, 7:30pm
BSCC Atrium

Musica Universalis, or ‘universal music’, refers to an ancient philosophical concept that the movement of celestial bodies create their own music based the mathematical proportions and vibrations of their inter-relational orbits. This idea, that the universe and galaxies have their own celestial music, has inspired many composers to create choral music of both sacred and secular texts.
The Vancouver Cantata Singers brings you a concert of 19th century and contemporary works, exploring the poetry and music of the planets and heavenly spheres. The concert features works by internationally renowned classical choral composers such as Erik Ešenvalds, Ola Gjeilo and Vancouver-based composers, Stephen Chatman, Craig Galbraith, and Larry Nickel. Plus an arrangement for choir of Bjork’s Cosmogony by local composer, Kristopher Fulton.

If you've never heard the VCS singing in the BSCC Atrium, check out this video for a special treat!

CIHR Spring Project Grants

Registration Deadline: February 6
Application Deadline: March 6

UBC SPARC is offering a variety of support services for this grant competition. Check out SPARC's CIHR Project Grant page.

MSFHR Health System Impact Fellowship

MSFHR is partnering with CIHR on their 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship program to help develop BC’s health policy research talent and build capacity for the integration of policy into decision-making. For health system organizations this is an opportunity to have a policy fellow contribute their research and analytic talents to a specific health policy challenge. For researchers, it is an opportunity to apply their research expertise and develop their policy skills.
BC had great success in the 2018 competition with 13 CIHR Fellows placed in BC health organizations to address pressing policy issues in our province. You can see the list of 2018 BC institutions and projects here.
The 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship competition is now open for applications. If you have any health researchers with an interest in applying their skills to a local health policy issue at either the PhD or post-doctoral fellow level, they can find more information on the MSFHR website and ResearchNet. On both sites you will find a list of health system organizations that are interested in hosting an embedded scholar. Applicants are also welcome to apply with a host organization that is not listed.

Working on a grant application?

SPARC can help!

UBC's Support Programs to Advance Research Capacity (SPARC) offers comprehensive reviews for competitive funding applications, as well as workshops and tutorials to streamline the application process. Learn about the different services they offer, get to know their team, or contact them with any questions that you have about research support at UBC.

Interesting things x2

Need artwork?

Check out Dimensions.Guide for excellent diagrams showing relative dimensions. You probably won't need a zebra for your next research poster, but you might be able to use reclining humans. The designers take requests, so ICORD has asked for diagrams of people in manual, power, and sports wheelchairs.
We'll keep you posted!

74 kinds of hot chocolate, and then some poutine

Vancouver's hot chocolate festival starts this Saturday and runs until Valentine's Day. Twenty-nine Metro Vancouver restaurants, cafes, and bakeries will be offering special hot drinks during this event.

Once you've had your fill of hot chocolate, you can balance out all that sugar with a serious helping of fries, cheese curd, and gravy at La Poutine Week.

Your body might not love you so much after this.

BSCC and UBC Resources

What is the BICP?

You've likely seen the badge in our newsletter and the posters around the atrium, telling people about the Blusson Integrated Cures Partnership, but do you know about all of the different kinds of research and activities being supported by the BICP? ICORD and the Rick Hansen Institute have created a webpage to inform you about the work that we're doing together with the Rick Hansen Foundation through this unique collaboration.

New year, new flasks! Buy 2 cases of flasks from VWR and get a free case of PBS!

Please contact Clare or Nadia for more information and promotional offers.

Do you recruit participants for research studies?

If you do, and you want your studies to be posted on the ICORD website, you can submit your study information online.
Just log into the members section of the site (scroll down to the bottom of any page and click on ICORD user: login (contact Matt if you need a reminder of the login ID and password). Complete the form, and the ICORD communications team will create a new study page using the information you've provided. We will also forward your study to the SCI-BC recruitment coordinator if you request this.
