Resurrection Voices

Lake Country Cares Cab (LCCC) is a non-profit transportation service that operates out of our church. LCCC provides car transportation for the elderly and special needs/disabled residents in our Lake Country community to destinations that they otherwise could not get to. The Cab averages 195 rides per week, is 80 percent run by volunteers, and uses more than 20 drivers per week.

I got involved through a conversation with some friends who drive for LCCC. They mentioned that once I retired, I should consider driving a shift (morning or afternoon) or two each week. They found it quite fulfilling. I gave it a try over a year ago and they were so right! I was hooked!

A short story … there was an older woman who had recently moved in with one of her daughters and her family. She was always late, she needed to use a walker, and was always a bit grumpy. Not my favorite ride. One day, I was waiting for her at the pick-up destination and getting more agitated by the minute as she was late and getting later. I called her cell, but no answer. I finally looked at my ride schedule again and, to my great horror, realized that I was in the wrong place! It was all my fault and I sped to where I was supposed to pick her up. Of course, now I was really late and apologized profusely. She could have unloaded on me, but instead, looked me right in the eye and said (smiling!), “Why don’t we just start over?” I was humbled and dumb-struck at the grace and kindness that she had offered me. I sincerely thanked her for her understanding and kindness, and we had a very enjoyable ride back to where she now lived. Continuing the story, her health improved as did her attitude. I now intently listened to her story and began to understand why she was so “grumpy” early on. I realized that I probably would have been intolerable had I been in the same situation. What a lesson in humility! What a wonderful messenger of God’s grace and love that He sent to teach me!

There are other similar experiences as well. Driving for Cares Cab has allowed me to witness God’s grace in action. It has allowed me to live out my faith by helping others who can’t help themselves, and to try to share love and kindness with others less fortunate. It helps me try to do God’s will as I understand it.

In the past, I have invited you to volunteer at Church of the Resurrection. I now also invite you to consider driving for Lake Country Cares Cab. As was promised me, I promise you that you will find it very enjoyable and so rewarding!

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The week of January 18-25 is celebrated each year in the northern hemisphere ecumenically with the whole church. Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The theme this year is "Justice" from Deuteronomy 16:18-20 - "Justice and only justice you shall pursue".

Join us for Wednesday Worship on Jan. 23 at 6:30 for a prayer service led by FYI, with scripture, prayer and contemplative music. Prayer Stations included in the service are a large floor map of the world for praying, a labyrinth for meditation and other participatory activities. All are welcome.

El Salvador Visit

On Sunday February 3 the El Salvador Ministry team will share their photos and stories from their
November visit. All are welcome to come and enjoy the colorful photos from this beautiful country and
hear about the rich relationships growing with our sister parish, Jesus es Amor. Quesadilla Salvadorena
(a sweet breakfast cake) and Salvadoran Hot Chocolate will be served during Fellowship.
All are welcome.

CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS

Join us in the Fellowship Hall for an Adult Education opportunity that you won’t want to miss.

Our own Dr. Dan Schroeder will be leading us in exploring CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS, a tool created to help people communicate in helpful and productive ways when conflict arises. Useful at home, at work, at church… “wherever two or more are gathered.”

Overview
The right to criticize must be earned, even if the counsel/feedback is constructive in nature. Before you are entitled to tinker with another person’s self-esteem, you are obligated first to demonstrate your respect for him/her as a person. When a relationship of confidence has been carefully constructed, you will have earned the right to discuss a potentially threatening topic. Your motives will have been clarified. Then, the subsequent “crucial conversation” or “tough talk” is positioned to go well. Techniques and methods for doing so will be the focus of this three-part series during the adult forum after the Sunday worship services on January 13, 20, and 27.

About the Facilitator
Dan Schroeder, a longstanding member of COR, will facilitate these discussions. In his professional life, Dan leads a consulting practice (Organization Development Consultants, Inc.—ODC) based in Brookfield and teaches graduate, adult, and professional courses in the School of Business at Edgewood College in Madison. A former Featured Columnist for Biz Times Milwaukee, he is the current Chair of the Psychology Examining Board in Wisconsin. Dan and his wife, Sue, have four children: Liz, Reed, Jack, and Luke.

The “Souper” Bowl of Caring is a pan-denominational gathering of gifts to share with those who are in need. It began nearly three decades ago when a church youth group in Texas prayed,
Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who don’t even have a bowl of soup to eat.

Since then, more than $143 million dollars have been raised for local charities around the country through “Souper Bowl” of caring. It has become a powerful movement to transform the big game into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.

On Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, COR will be collecting your gifts of money and non-perishable food items in a special Souper Bowl event. Please be a part sharing God’s love with those in need—give generously on Super/Souper Bowl Sunday.

How do I participate?
-Bring cans of soup.
– Write a check to the church for Souper Bowl Sunday with “Souper Bowl” on the memo line.
– Bring some dollar bills with you that Sunday for the offering at the door.

Save the Date for Vacation Bible School 2019!

This summer, we will be traveling "To Mars and Beyond" with VBS. Mark your calendar for Monday through Thursday, June 24-27, 5:30-7:30 pm. VBS is for children ages 3 through 5th grade (yes, 5th-graders, we've changed our age range so you can still be part of the fun!). Stay tuned for more information in March.

Thinking about and making a financial commitment before the end of the year helps both you and the church plan for 2019. The Finance Team is actively developing a budget for the new year to meet the needs of the church and to assure that we can pursue our missions.

Help serve breakfast at the Hope Center on January 26

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to serve others? Whether you answered “yes” or “no,” the Human Concerns Team invites you to donate food and/or help serve breakfast to Hope Center guests on Jan. 26 at 9 am. The Hope Center is located at 502 N East Ave., Waukesha (near Carroll University).

Here’s how you can help:

Prepare an egg bake
Provide pastries, muffins, bagels and cream cheese, fruit, milk and/or juice
Serve the meal (meal prep begins at 7:30 a.m.)

The Hope Center is a non-profit organization that has been serving the basic needs of financial assistance, food and clothing in Waukesha County for more than 30 years.
