Antarctica In-Depth: A Photographer's Journey | Jan. 29

A must-see for those interested in nature photography, outdoor enthusiasts, and historians interested in the Shackleton Expedition (1914-1917).

Join photographer Boomer Jerritt in the Timberline Theatre for an entertaining presentation featuring images and stories from his time as photographer in residence with One Ocean Expeditions. Jerritt spent four years exploring South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula, a heavily glaciated environment which plays host to huge tabular icebergs, feeding humpback whales, leopard seals, and of course, those funny, curious king penguins!

Tickets are $18 in advance, or $20 at the door. Partial proceeds will go to support the Greenways Land Trust. Book your seats at https://strathconaphotography.com/events/

Doors @ 6:30, Presentation @ 7:00. 1681 S Dogwood St.

New Canada Food Guide: Share Your Thoughts

Health Canada released a new Canada Food Guide on January 22. It looks a lot different than the old guide, with a focus on key guidelines for making healthy food choices, rather than a recommended number of servings from the traditional food groups.

Check out the new recommendations (here), and share your thoughts with us via the Strathcona Food Network Facebook group.

Feedback Needed: BC Poverty Reduction

At Greenways, we recognize that community well-being and a healthy environment go hand-in-hand. True, sustainable wealth must include a vibrant and healthy ecosystem, and at the same time, a society with poverty often cannot sufficiently care for its natural environment.

The BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction is undertaking community consultations on their poverty reduction strategy. Share your feedback on a basic income approach to poverty reduction now! Click here for the online form.
Visit our website and check out the NEWS section. You will find Greenways' recent media coverage listed.

Project Update | Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek

The Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek is running full steam ahead this winter. Restoration works planned include continuing the alder-thinning program with subsequent replanting of diverse native species to enhance riparian vegetation biodiversity, and elevating the footbridge at the confluence with the Campbell River to enhance fish passage. Earlier this summer, restoration works continued upstream near the Vineyard Church, with gravel and large woody debris placement, and planting over 400 native shrubs and trees with the Carihi Forestry Class. Many thanks to our funders the Campbell River Salmon Foundation and Fisheries and Oceans Canada Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program for supporting the restoration project!

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Didn't get enough birding at the Christmas Bird Count? You're in luck!

The Great Backyard Bird Count, an initiative from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audobon Society, need your help to survey bird populations in your backyard from February 15-18. Do it for 15 minutes or for all four days. Learn more about the initiative and why this data is important for researchers to understand bird populations here.

Volunteers Needed

The CR Salmon Foundation’s 2019 fundraising banquet and auction is coming up on March 9th and they are reaching out to community members who might be willing to help them find donations for the silent or live auction.

All funds raised at this event go towards projects in the area and local groups are always welcome to send them funding proposals for worthwhile projects.
