Feminism as a Global Solidarity Movement
This article interviews Leta Hong Fincher, who wrote Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China. The book is an informative, inspiring story of how five women in China ("the feminist five") were jailed for their protests and ultimately released. It also explores and traces the growth of feminist consciousness in China.
Hong Fincher explains that far from a small movement on the fringes of Chinese society, feminism is on the rise, from the burgeoning and ongoing #MeToo movement, to increasing calls for protections for survivors of domestic violence (China only passed a law against domestic violence in 2016), to protests against workplace discrimination.
