Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

January 17, 2019

Dear Friends and Families,
This Friday, "report cards", or progress notes, will go home with all kindergarten - sixth grade students. These progress notes are a component in our broader system of communication with families regarding the ongoing work and growth of students. These reports contain information about the work that children have been doing in various content areas as well as information about each individual child's skills.  Families, as you review these reports with your child, please ask them what within it they are proud of? What is something they would like to improve? Where is an area where they feel they've been particularly challenged or "worked hard"?  These notes are not an evaluation of all they can do, but a report on the work they've demonstrated thus far.  If you have any questions about anything on these reports, please reach out to the sending teacher; we welcome the opportunity to further strengthen home/school communication and connection.

Thanks to Will Rounds for the awesome ski transport yesterday and to all of our on mountain volunteers. We have 19 different ski/board groups accommodating all of our students and their various skills. That takes a lot of on mountain help! We are in need of a few more volunteers to join as chaperones; please consider if you can spare at least 4-5 Wednesday afternoons (and complete the fingerprinting process) in order to help us keep this program working well. Did we mention it is also lots of fun? Contact the school if you are interested and available (kkorb@huusd.org).

Respectfully,

Kaiya

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE: FLU VS. COLD

Influenza (also known as flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Flu is different from a cold. Flu usually comes on suddenly.  There have been reported cases of flu in our area.

In addition to the treatments that your doctor will recommend for the flu, we encourage everyone to keep practicing the following protocols to help keep us all as healthy as possible:

  1. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  3. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  4. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
  5. Stay home until you are better. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever (>100F)  is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
