In association with the National Rural Press Club, we proudly invite you to a presentation by Dr Shenggen Fan, Director General, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) co-hosted by the Crawford Fund, the Australian Centre for International Research (ACIAR) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), on 11 February 2019 at 4-6pm, including a free networking reception.
The Australian and global food system faces major trends and challenges related to rapid urbanisation, changing diets, climate change, political uncertainties and anti-globalisation sentiments, which also have significant implications at national and regional levels.
Food systems can play a key role in nurturing human health and supporting environmental sustainability, yet currently, they are threatening both.
Dr Fan will discuss strategies for the production and consumption of healthy and sustainable foods, climate mitigation, reducing food loss and waste, and strengthening governance, which will be central to guiding widespread action to address these challenges in Australia beyond.

 Dr Shenggen Fan is world renowned for his work on transition economies, global food systems, and agricultural and rural development and has been Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) since 2009. IFPRI is arguably the world’s preeminent food policy think-tank, founded in the early 1970s to improve the understanding of national agricultural and food policies to promote the adoption of innovations in agricultural technology.
He is one of the Champions of Target 12.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilising action, and accelerating progress toward cutting global food loss and waste. He serves as a member of the Lead Group for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. He serves as advisor to many national governments (including China and Vietnam) on agriculture, food security and nutrition.
In 2017, Dr Fan received the highly prestigious Fudan Management Excellence Award, referred to in China as the “Nobel Prize for Management” and in 2014, he received the Hunger Hero Award from the World Food Programme in recognition of his commitment to and leadership in fighting hunger worldwide.
Dr Fan received a PhD in applied economics from the University of Minnesota and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Nanjing Agricultural University in China. He grew up on a small farm in south eastern China where the family raised chickens and pigs and eked out rice and wheat on a plot about half the size of a football field. |
