Note to Self: I am a Work in Progress

At this time of year we are often asked, ‘What is your New Year’s resolution?’ And, you know, that can often make us think that we have to change something, or that we need to ‘fix’ something about ourselves.

I have chosen to believe that I am a ‘work in progress’.

Tactile Resources Help People Talk About Feelings

Talking about feelings, relationships or difficult experiences can be very uncomfortable for people. A cascade of stress hormones can be released by our brain when these topics are raised, especially if trauma is present.

Have you noticed that our hands are often clear indicators of discomfort? Whether it is balled fists, hands thrust deep into pockets, nervously rearranging hair, biting fingernails, flicking, tapping or picking—our hands speak volumes.

‘While our so-called “panic hormones” are part of our self-defence mechanism and are therefore to be celebrated, a few skills to “unpanic ourselves” and decompress are also crucial to have in our bag of tricks.’

STOP PRESS!

St Luke’s Innovative Resources named as provider under Victorian State Government - school readiness funding.

School readiness funding is a new initiative of the Victorian State Department of Education and Training, designed to help children achieve their best at kindergarten.

Our products and training have been identified for inclusion on the Department’s menu. This means that we have been through a formal validation process that analysed our alignment to the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework, considered in the light of their evidence base.

Michelle's Story using Strength Cards

I would like to share this very simple way that I use Strength Cards with primary school children in my work as a guidance counsellor.

I deal the cards out into a pile, one at a time, and say the word as I do — because some students respond better to verbal communication and some more to the visuals. I respond to any questions around what the strength might mean with a discussion, firstly asking the student what they think the word might mean, and we often look the word up on my computer.

The students choose however many strengths they identify with, we shortlist to six, and then they have to pick their top three. We write the top three onto three separate pieces of paper or print the words out from the computer. Each student colours and decorates around the strengths, sometimes drawing pictures around how they use each strength or could use the strength when issues arrive. I then laminate the finished product and they take it with them. They have the choice to keep it in their classroom tidy tray to look at, or to hang up at home. I do this with the student again at a later date to see how they are going with their strengths and/or to identify new ones.
