The Youth Speak!

Dear parents/carers

In our society, of which schools are very much a part, it is very easy to develop a biased or jaded view of the ‘youth of today’ as a consequence of their activities or from what we read and see in the media.

However, this is not what I see on a day-to-day basis working with our 900 students, your children, at John Hanson.

While they are not perfect – none of us are! They are a credit to themselves and you.

This was very much evident on Wednesday evening of this week when 2 groups of our students took part in the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition, this year held at John Hanson.

Teams of 3 students had to prepare and then stand up in front of an audience and speak about their chosen topic.

Both of the teams had spent many hours preparing for the competition under the watchful eye of Mrs Neale from the English faculty. However, the vast majority of the preparation and organisation had been done by the students in their own time.

In am pleased and very proud to announce that our senior team made up of Emily Adcock, Hannah Whitby and Maisie Scahill were triumphant and move through to the regional round of this competition.

I would also like to congratulate the intermediate team of Kira Thompson, Jordan Sparrow and Elsie Porter-Hirst who acquitted themselves really well.

When the youth at John Hanson speak its worth listening!

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Regards

Rotary Youth Speaks: John Hanson Victorious!

John Hanson’s Senior Team – Hannah Whitby, Emily Adcock and Maisie Scahill – put in a winning performance at the event on January 16th. The team explored the links between gender and the economy (Why are ladies’ razors more expensive than men’s?). Their win means they will be competing in the next regional competition in March.

Our intermediate team – Jordan Sparrow, Elsie Porter-Hirst and Margaret Carroll – presented a powerful and engaging speech that asked educators to look at a more rounded curriculum, one that focused on social skills as well as the academic. Sadly, they were narrowly defeated by an outstanding performance from Rookwood.

Both teams have worked hard over the past couple of months and they are a wonderful example of creativity, originality and the essential resilience it takes to stand up and address a hall full of strangers!

Book Fair coming soon
The Book Fair will be arriving in the LRC on Tuesday, 29th January.

There will be loads of new titles on the shelves, special offers and a competition to win a book pack and a Fire 7 tablet.  All you have to do is answer the following question:  Who is your personal hero and why?

Please support our Book Fair, every book you buy will mean more free books for our school.
