FRIDAY LETTER

Storm Update
Thank you again, Village, for your patience as we mop up after the storm Wednesday.  Accordingly, this FL will be more 'lite' than usual.

Thank you also to Public Works, Carmel Police Department, and Monterey Fire who did an excellent job protecting lives and property.  Monterey Fire Fighters responded to 32 events in the City, and worked extremely well with our team of contractors and investor-owned utilities.  Carmel PD logged 162 seperate storm-related incidents, and have been recognized for all their quick, courteous service.  Carmel PW addressed 41 storm-related tree incidents, numerous street closures, and a litany of calls for service regarding storm water flow and debris in the right-of-way.

Thanks also to the non public safety staff and volunteers traveling door-to-door checking on the well being of residents, sharing information, clearing catch basins, and generally pitching in wherever necessary.

Many thanks also to the Carmel Youth Center who generously allowed us to set up a warming center in their facility to accommodate those in need during the aftermath of the storm.  We're grateful for your partnership, CYC.

PGE will continue working over the weekend until all power is restored (the remaining locations in the Village), and Bob will remain in contact with them over the weekend.  It appears the remaining locations are:  Carpenter and Alta, Casanova and Fourth, Casanova between Ocean and Fourth, and Fifth between Lincoln and Monte Verde.

We will, of course, continue sweeping this weekend.

Staff, you were extraordinary during this event.  Thank you all for your dedication and perseverance under pressure; please continue to be safe.

Sad Condolences
We just learned that skilled and genteel Village architect Bob Littell died at Community Hospital last night having suffered a heart attack recently.  Bob understood the character of the Village, and it was reflected in his designs.  He also checked the volume standards for new houses on a contractual basis for the City.  We will miss Bob's wry smile and soft-spoken nature.  Fair winds and following seas Bob.

Deck safety among 2018 legislative actions affecting the Village
During the 2018 legislative session the Governor signed into law SB 721 – Building Standards: Decks and Balconies. The legislation, passed in response to recent fatal deck collapse incidents, now requires periodic inspections of decks, balconies, and similar elevated structures for buildings with 3 or more multi-family dwelling units. Inspections must be performed by an individual with credentials listed in the bill.  The purpose of the inspection is to determine that the “exterior elevated elements and their waterproofing elements” are in generally safe condition and free from hazardous conditions caused by decay, deterioration, or improper modification. The person performing the inspections is required to be hired by the building owner and may not be an employee of the jurisdiction in which the building exists. The first inspection by the City must be completed by January 1, 2025 and follow-up inspections are required by January 1 every six years thereafter.  For more information read the bill at: http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB721  or contact Dick Bower, Building Official at 831-620-2022.

Holiday Lighting Reminder
We would like to remind to all commercial property owners and businesses, that the holiday lights were required to come down on January 9th, per the City's Holiday Lighting Policy. Next week Code Compliance will be providing friendly reminders to those who still have holiday/string lights on their buildings and trees. On a related note, this week the Planning Commission reviewed three potential lighting designs for the Ocean Avenue median for the purpose of making recommendations to the City Council. The Commission voted in favor of using tree up-lights, which provide an elegant look that showcases the trees in the median.

Reminder Siren Testing on Tuesday January 22nd at Noon
One more reminder for the siren testing taking place on Tuesday, January 22nd at Noon.  We will be testings the siren on top of the fire station.  This loud siren was previously used to summon the volunteer fire personnel but we may be able to use it as an early warning system for extreme emergencies when time is of the essence.
