Boys' Varsity Basketball

Last weekend the Boys' Varsity Basketball team played well when they visited Buffalo, NY. They defeated London Basketball Academy, but lost their first game to Father Carr. David Penney ‘19 was named MVP of the first game, while Joel Kabimba '19 was named MVP of the second game. After their second game, they attempted to go see Niagara Falls,  but the snow back in Virginia was getting bad so they played it safe. They returned home late on Sunday night but were ready to practice on Tuesday.

The team is growing and getting better day in day out.

Girls' Varsity Basketball

The Lady Dragons won the Think Pink Tournament last weekend at Foxcroft School with wins over both Foxcroft and Randolph Macon Academy.

On Tuesday the girls defeated Foxcroft for the second time in four days to extend their win streak to 3 games.

Varsity Equestrian

The MA Equestrian Team travelled to Gaithersburg, MD last Saturday, squeaking in their third competition ahead of the snowstorm. The show ranks as the most well organized we have attended this year - and with some big divisions - an unusual four sections of Varsity Intermediate! The efficiency was well appreciated, as snowflakes were just beginning to fall as the show wrapped up, and reports of snow already at home had riders heading out as soon as they finished riding, rather than waiting for everyone to finish, as is the norm.

During the week leading up to the show we spent a lot of time practicing picking up canter leads on a straight line - how to position your horse so you are certain to get the correct lead. When you are riding a horse you only met 5 minutes prior, good preparation can make all the difference. Our top placing rider was Kat Doherty ‘21 (pictured above with Coach Lee), our high point rider last year, with a 2nd over fences and 4th on the flat. Cece Twiggs ‘22 was 4th in her flat class, and Isabelle Horn ‘21 was 5th in both of her classes.

The team has just two shows left to earn points to qualify for Regionals.

Varsity Swimming

The Varsity Swim Team traveled to Fredericksburg on January 11th for their first meet against Fredericksburg Academy, James Monroe HS, Randolph-Macon Academy, and the Highland Hawks. While falling to three of the teams, the boys' team defeated the Highland Hawks 43-28 and the girls' team defeated Randolph-Macon 65-33.

Alex Carbonara '23 placed 11th in both the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while Denise Loewinger '20 placed 6th in the 200 individual medley. Chelsea Penfield '19 placed 7th in the 50 freestyle and 4th place in the 100 backstroke, while Holiday Price '20 placed 16th in the 50 freestyle and 10th place in the 100 breaststroke.

The four girls placed 5th and 7th in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, respectively.

Meanwhile, Max McLaughlan '20 placed 7th in the 100 freestyle and 5th in the 100 backstroke. Sef Metwally '19 placed 5th in the 200 individual medley and 8th in the 100 breaststroke, while Russell Shoja '20 placed 3rd in the 100 butterfly and 4th in the 100 breaststroke.

The swim team will have their next meet in Manassas on Saturday, January 19th. Go Dragons!
