TEACHER PREP

What Works in Teaching Teachers

The field of teacher preparation — teaching the teachers — is essential to creating a transformative classroom experience. A new report from the SREB Teacher Preparation Commission brings together what we know (and don’t) about the programs and methods that make a difference.

State Policies to Improve Teacher Preparation summarizes research including:
  • Academic qualifications by themselves are weak predictors of teacher effectiveness. A multiple-measures approach — for example, looking at undergraduate GPA along with mock teaching and performance portfolios — does better.
  • Intensive methods instruction and high quality clinical experiences can have an outsized impact on how ready teachers think they are to teach. Read the report>
DYSLEXIA POLICY
Helping Every Child Read

Approximately 40 percent of children require explicit, systematic reading instruction. For students with dyslexia, having the right tools available to promote success is imperative. What does research say about how children should learn to read? What are the available resources for dyslexia screening and intervention programs? What are best practices for teacher training to address dyslexia? Find answers to these questions and more in Dyslexia Policy: The Changing Landscape.

HIGHER ED
Fellowship Fosters Faculty Diversity

Addressing the lack of minority doctoral students and faculty has helped to strengthen higher education in most of SREB's 16 member states. The dividends for states and institutions that support the SREB State-Doctoral Scholars Program include:
  • Program graduates becoming faculty members in their home states
  • An average return of $250,000 in research funding for each doctoral graduate
Review DSP's 25-year history in the effort to increase faculty diversity. To continue this important work, state support is crucial to make sure eligible students are applying for the the DSP Fellowship. Interested parties take an eligibility quiz to see if they meet the application requirements. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2019. Watch the videos and see what our scholars say about the program.
TECH CENTERS
Forum Addresses Tech Practices & Paths

SREB’s Technology Centers That Work program helps tech centers review and implement the actions needed to produce high-demand, high-wage graduates. Career and tech center teams attended the annual TCTW National Leaders’ Forum last week in Miramar Beach, Florida. Watch a clip from the 2019 Forum where Cecil Bonner, principal of South Carolina's Anderson Five Career Campus, discusses the growth mindset students are displaying in his school. "You don't have it  yet, but you'll get there."

Policy & Practice brings you news about improving education across the continuum, early childhood through doctoral education, in SREB states.
