OUR TELLERS - NOS CONTEURS
Cindy Shantz
When was the last time you heard Willie Nelson tell you a story? Well on November 9th, 2018, that's exactly what happened in Nanaimo at "Stories on Friday", the monthly storytelling event hosted by Nanaimo's Around Town Tellers. Okay, so it wasn't exactly Willie who told this story -- it was Cindy Shantz, a member of Around Town Tellers. The theme on November 9th was "Home".

Elinor Benjamin
A supportive crowd came out on January 10 for “Cousin Silas and Moose Woman: a Baptist missionary meets the Mi’kmaq,” Elinor Benjamin's tribute to an impressive Nova Scotian, and her second cousin, five times removed: Silas Tertius Rand 1810 –1889. Rand learned, mostly on his own, twelve languages including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Mi’kmaq, and Maliseet, and transcribed and translated many oral histories, stories and myths from the Mi’kmaq people.

Lorne Brown
An open letter from Lorne Brown to SC-CC members:
"You may have noticed that I have been conspicuous by my absence for the last several years. I still remain an enthusiastic member and supporter of SC-CC, and I miss you all. I love following what is happening in the world of SC-CC."

Pennishish (Louis Bird)
Interview with Pennishish (Louis Bird): Who were your mentors in your growth as a story listener and later as a story teller? "Number one is my mother and later my grandmother. These were the first two people. And then later on there were other elders that I happen to be with and I listened to them. All kinds of stories. The first is the animals and the second is the birds. All kinds of birds."

Seana Kozar Radio Programme
On January 21st, 2019 at 10 a.m. PST, “Flying by Wireless,” a live to air radio show devoted to stories and storytelling took to the airwaves on CHLY 101.7 FM in Nanaimo. The show is hosted by storyteller Seana Kozar and will feature stories and interviews by guest tellers (Big hint if you happen to be coming to Nanaimo and area...!). Seana shares tales from her repertoire, storied music that she loves as well as her own original work, with some research and commentary to tie it all together. At present, listeners can tune in online at chly.ca/listen when the show is live.

Seana Kozar World Storytelling day performances

Seana Kozar will be giving three performances during World Storytelling (Week) from her new work, “Tales from the Treehouse Perilous.” This work is a fantasy epic in several episodes, and weaves together themes from traditional folktales in an original piece.

Storytellers Circle of Halifax, December, 2018 Event
On Thursday, December 14, 2018  we hosted The Unknown Mary: The Virgin Mary in Folktales, Legends and Song at the Local Women’s Council House, 989 Young Ave, Halifax

This was a joyful and unfamiliar view of the Virgin Mary, presented by storyteller Claire Miller and ballad singer Margo Carruthers, with Heather-Anne Pentz on percussion. Pat Dickson commented afterwards, “Well, we certainly ended 2018 in grand style! Claire, Margo and Heather Pentz provided us with a stunning, original presentation on the Virgin Mary in all her many incarnations. I was honoured to host such a talented trio before a standing room only crowd.
Very full house indeed!

David Merleau- SC-Radio-CC

Hello All,
Welcome to the new year! In the lead up to this year's conference in Fredericton, SC-Radio-CC will be focusing on exploring the ways that our radio and podcasts can address the Storytelling needs of educators, parents and young children. Our aim is to bring to SC-CC 2019 a new and improved All Day Kids/Enfants tout
l'temps initiative to begin rollout in the fall. It is too soon to tell what it will look like, but I can tell you we will be adding tons of fresh material to the daytime stream and at this time we are assessing the potential of a AllDayKids podcast for download that teachers can bring into the classroom and parents can bring into the car for long car rides! Want to help with our refocused All Day Kids initiative? Send us an email with your ideas! radio@storytellers-conteurs.ca

Stay tuned,
David

David

An Update from Marion Gruner, Communications and Development Manager and StorySave Program Manager

Greetings storytellers! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season filled with warmth, laughter and story. It’s been a busy winter so far, with StorySave sales, nominations and of course the production of Comfort Ero’s album and podcast. In the communications and development department, I have also been working on an assessment of SC-CC’s website, its design, content and functionality in consideration of changes to help make the website more user-friendly. More to come on that. Looking ahead, information about Conference 2019 programming is now up on the website, and very soon we’ll be opening registration. Be sure to keep checking the site for updates!

With the New Year in full gear, consider reviewing your bio in the Storytellers Directory, and ensure that you have a photo, a bio that indicates any different languages you tell in, and most importantly, your contact information. SC-CC gets lots of inquiries about hiring tellers, and if your email isn’t there, they can’t contact you!

Here’s to a great 2019!
Marion Gruner

Marion Gruner

It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the death of one of our most loved storytellers, Carol McGirr. After a long battle with her health, Carol died on January 2, 2019.
