Learning from our Past (and looking forward)

This month we are both looking back - exploring our ancient past through a fantastic new exhibition - as well as looking forward to a new future for our Biosphere programme for The Living Coast.
We are proud to play a part in the just-launched archaeology gallery at Brighton Museum - see our Spotlight article "Dig this City!" - working with colleagues and partners to bring our deep past to light.
The Living Coast is profiled in a display and new video illustrating how learning about our past could help to inform our present and future.
At the gallery you can meet some of our local ancestors in incredible lifelike detail - see 'WoW!' below.
Find out more about local archaeology, both at the museum and beyond, through this month's 'Bio Blog' article (excerpt below) by esteemed local expert Dr Matt Pope.
Returning to the present day, I wish to let you know that this will be my last communication as I move on to a national nature conservation role. I have greatly enjoyed the last 7+ years of managing our Biosphere programme, including successfully securing UNESCO Biosphere status in 2014 and taking forward its environmental work since. The challenge for the next manager (job ad below) will be to build on and develop further this foundation through a new strategy for the next five years. I wish them and the team all the best in their endeavours, and hope you too will continue to support us in future.

Bio Blog - Travels in Time

Transport yourself back to Brighton & Hove’s deep archaeological past!
The new ‘ Elaine Evans Archaeology Gallery’ is now open at Brighton Museum, offering an exciting new place through which to understand the ancient peoples and landscapes of the city and beyond.
This is a state-of-the-art display of key artefacts, sites and people, to bring you into close contact with our local archaeology from the Ice Age through to the Saxon period.
The most stunning aspects of the new exhibition are the vivid, life-like and characterful facial reconstructions of five local individuals from different time periods, which bring the city’s ancient dead back to life!
Hopefully curiosity will then drive you to try and visit some of the locations where the people and objects were found in ‘The Living Coast’, such as the former Hove Barrow (picture above) in which the renowned ‘amber cup’ was found…. |
