“We fashion wood for a house, but it is the emptiness inside that makes it liveable.”
– Tao Te Ching
Emptiness is vital. It is the space that contains the energy of a house in which we grow. Think about a plant and how it needs space to spread its roots and branches, or how the size of a fish tank limits the size of the fish. How you fill the space of your home directly impacts how you feed your spirit.
I have noticed a trend towards minimalism and the need to sort out what is truly essential. While not as extreme as some minimalist practices, decluttering our homes is the most fundamental part of feng shui. Until this is done, it is like trying to fill a cup that is already full. You must release what does not serve you to make space for positive energy to come in.

“The human body can be compared to a house. Having clogged arteries and blocked intestines prevents proper absorption of nutrition. Likewise, a cluttered house obstructs the flow of energy. And without energy, it is impossible for us to grow.”
As feng shui masters, our goal is to teach our clients that everything is connected and that your house is an extension of you. Your body is the temple of your spirit, and your home is the ground on which this temple resides. Once you see this clearly, it becomes easy to understand why there are so many layers to feng shui practice and different levels of adjustments. We want to teach our clients how to make mindful selections as they adjust their feng shui. It is important to create a collection of high quality and meaningful items to fill your space.
Let me explain the four levels of feng shui adjustments and how each one modifies energy in a different way.
The first level is physical. Feng shui can be adjusted through all the things we are able to see and touch in our environment. From the walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, furniture, plants, rugs, paintings, statues and so forth. These occupy what is known as the “positive” space in architecture and can be changed with relative ease. Simply put, physical changes make a great impact on the physical level.
The second level is energetic. When feng shui is adjusted energetically, we are dealing with what is known as “negative” space in architecture. This is the “empty” space between all physical objects. Occupying this seemingly empty space is invisible energy or “chi.” Chi can be effectively changed by physical items. In some cases, chi becomes stagnant energy. When, for example, sad or tragic events occur inside a house, it leaves traces of disruptive energy which may actually harm the lives of future occupants. Unhealthy chi is released through energetic work such as properly performing a clearing ceremony or placing mantra charms during a blessing ceremony.
The third level of feng shui adjustments is aesthetic. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what we deem beautiful generally has a positive effect on us. Although we each have our own style or sense of aesthetics, there are guiding principles in feng shui that help us select the things that embody positive meaning and auspicious symbolism.
Finally, the fourth level is functional. Feng shui is effective when it fulfills its purpose. A space should be adjusted in ways that enhance the productivity of everyone in it. Items should be selected and placed accordingly so that they are both aesthetically pleasing and logically arranged.
So remember, how you make your home and what you put inside will greatly impact the quality of your life. I tell my clients, “Where you invest your hard-earned money, your efforts, your heart and your life force is how you feed your spirit and that becomes how you create the life you have.”

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”

Happy Lunar New Year! The Year of the Earth Pig starts February 5, 2019. The Earth Pig is known for its harmonious qualities as a steward of Mother Earth.
The bounty that Mother Nature provides to us through our forests is endless. Trees release life-giving oxygen, are natural filters that purify the air, create shade to cool and protect all living things, prevent soil erosion and landslide, allow us lumber to build - the list goes on and on. Besides all this, trees are why Earth is the beautiful Green Planet we love.
In this spirit, we would like to present our clients a thousand trees to herald the arrival of the Earth Pig Year and to celebrate our many years of growth together. In our clients’ honor, Liu Feng Shui is making a charitable gift of $1,000 to the National Forest Foundation. Each dollar plants a tree to help the reforestation after the devastating California Wildfires.
A seed planted today ensures a myriad of benefits our forests bring to future generations. May our gift express our appreciation for your patronage.
With deep gratitude,
Jenny and Julie Liu
