Free Online Resource: Learning Modules Welcoming all Abilities & Supporting Positive Behaviours

The online learning modules Welcoming all Abilities and Supporting Positive Behaviours was launched at the 2019 Sport for Life Conference. In partnership with Canadian Tire Jump Start,  Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability (ALACD)  has worked for the past 2 years to transform our All Abilities Welcome program into digital format. I am very excited to see this come to life. Other partners in the project were Sport for Life and Canucks Autism Network.

ALACD want to give you a heads up that this resource is free until February 23rd, after that there is a cost for users. The modules help learners to be more knowledgeable about welcoming individuals into their programs, facilities and services. I encourage you to send this information widely to your members and stakeholders for them to take advantage of the no cost arrangement. At the end of the eLearning modules, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Nutrition Tip

The Canadian Food Guide and Mindful Eating.

The revamped food guide is out with accolades and some detractors. Overall the key messages have remained: eat vegetables and plant-based food. What’s new? The government document is now recognizing the importance of the eating environment. First up: the new CFG recommends practicing mindful eating.  Mindful eating is a nonjudgmental acceptance of physical and emotional feelings while eating, thinking about one’s own physical hunger and satiety cues, and choosing nutritious pleasurable foods while being fully present in the moment undistracted from other activities (Lofgren, 2015 - read more).

Wellness Tip

How to Worry Less and Get more Done

Do you worry about your academic performance, job prospects, or where your relationship's going? Are you worried about passing or failing, winning or losing?

The problem: Worrying about a certain outcome can get in the way of achieving it. The solution? Learning to stay mindfully in the moment.

Mairin Husak

I have always had a love of movement, whether it be competitive sport or recreation. Movement has been the constant in my life. It has been good for my body—keeping me healthy and strong physically—as well as good for my emotional health—picking me up when times are tough. I always felt good knowing I could move confidently and had no limitations to do, try, or even learn any new skill or activity. This might sound way too easy and that I have not struggled with my body, level of activity, and capabilities. This is absolutely not the case. I have had injuries, surgeries, weight gain/loss, depression, sporting success/disappointment, three children, and times of prolonged inactivity due to any combination of the above factors.

Why is this important?

Being active ALWAYS brings me back—back to a healthy lifestyle, back to feeling competent and confident in my body, and mentally well. If it’s been this important in my life, then I want to help facilitate a movement journey for others, to help individuals grow and develop and foster a love of movement that lasts a lifetime.

That is what lead me to the PL major—a desire to help people capture and maximize their movement potential so they can reap the rewards physically, mentally (mental health, cognition) and socially. Physical activity is food for the body and brain. It is an integral part of a healthy and fulfilling life. The PL major program is the vessel I feel will help me accomplish my goals and contribute to something I care about so much.
