Are Your Toes and Nose Froze?

And have any of your kittens lost their mittens?

This might be the first year I can remember that Leadville hasn't been colder than many other places in the Continental U.S. I'm still amazed, though, when people who live in cold places like this often seem surprised when a big snowfall dumps inches and hands and feet of fluff.

"Can you believe how much snow we just got yesterday?" they ask.
"Yes. Yes, I can believe it. It's FeBRRRRuary in the Rocky Mountains!" I say to myself because I don't want to be rude.

So stay warm and stay upright (both physically and in character)! And remember to bend your knees when you're getting your free workout (shoveling and shoveling and shoveling and shoveling . . . )!

AUTHOR/BLOGGER/PODCASTER NEWS!
(let me know if you have literary news you'd like to share)
  • Engel Jones hosts the podcast 12MINUTECONVOS with Engel Jones and has a unique workbook designed for discovering Y.O.U.R. own personal brand. He interviewed me recently and I'll post the link when it's available! I hope he might come visit me in Leadville someday (he's from Trinidad and Tobago)!
  • Becky Jewell is not only a talented artist, she's also a thoughtful blogger. Follow her work and check out this AWESOME Sneak Peek of the work she's doing on creating a graphic novel based on my short story "Crow Magnum"!
  • Kathleen Kaska released the latest novel in her Kate Caraway Mystery Series--A Two Horse Town--December 29! After reading it, I interviewed her and can't wait to get the first book in her award-winning Sydney Lockhart mystery series set in the 1950s! Check out our visit on YouTube here: Kathleen Kaska
  • Howard Levine's novel Last Gasp also had me flipping pages to see how this political thriller would unfold. His opening pages reminded me of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code! I interviewed him last week--you can get to know him better on our YouTube visit here: Howard Levine interview.
  • Carol Bellhouse continues to create unique poetry set to film, and her latest is truly delightful. Watch this short video and let her know what you think: Dragons Fly at Dawn!
  • Saralyn Richard's latest novel Murder in the One Percent  "pulls back the curtain on the privileged and powerful rich" and has earned rave reviews since its publication. I look forward to reading it and interviewing Saralyn when I've done so!
  • Think about joining CIPA, a wonderful organization with resources to help writers and authors at every stage of their professional development. Do you have a book you believe is award-worthy? Submit it to the CIPA EVVY Awards now through May 18th to be considered for these prestigious awards!
Hmmmm. Seems I've been reading lots of murder mysteries lately!
So many talented creators, so little . . . you know.

BOOKS I'VE READ and WHAT I'M READING NOW
(in addition to what I might already have mentioned above.
I'll comment briefly on two or three each month)
  • Reading now: James Wood's How Fiction Works. I'm going to have to give this one a "Meh." Almost finished with it, but it's been a bit of slog. It started out okay, and there was a tidbit I immediately put to use while editing Waterwight Breathe, but Wood presumes readers have read all of the many works he's culled for examples to critique. I'm finding it stuffy.
  • Have read: John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley in Search of America. Love, love, love this book. It has 964 great reviews on Amazon. I'll let you come up with a reason for why you shouldn't read it! I don't think I have to tell you what a master wordsmith Steinbeck is, but I don't want to start sounding like James Wood right now! You're going to love his poodle.
HOPE YOU ENJOYED VALENTINE'S DAY!

Have you checked out my weekly podcast Alligator Preserves lately? There are short stories (which I create and narrate every month . . . ten so far) and interviews and insights galore! My latest short story--Anchors Aweigh--taps into the age-old Army-Navy football rivalry. It might make you laugh.

If you've ever considered becoming a "Patron of the Arts," I'd humbly ask you to consider becoming a patron of my Alligator Preserves podcast. It's easy and painless to become my patron on Patreon for as little as $1/month, and I will love you forever.
