President's Message

Sisters of the Cloth,
Will you have your first block done for the tin challenge? I have had the luxury of the remaining 4 cans to choose from and only today decided what to make. I'm not a fan of this blast of winter but it does give me an excuse to hide in the studio and get something accomplished!

Just take it one stitch at a time.

- Sandy
Tin Can Challenge is here!

Quilt Show 2020 Steering Committee Update

The Show Planning Committee meeting originally scheduled for Monday, February 4 has been cancelled

New date and time TBA.

We're looking for volunteers to co-ordinate our Memory Lane space (honouring guild members who have passed away since our last show) as well as Quilt Registrars (collection and registering all items submitted for display at the show).

If you are interested in either of these positions or if you would like to assist with any other aspects of our show, please contact Monica Wolfe (monica.e.wolfe@gmail.com)

Port Perry Patchers UFO Challenge 2018-19

Fellow UFOers:

If you have been relatively successful in your UFO goals, you should be halfway to completing your chosen projects!  For the next roll of the die, our President Sandy rolled the number 6 (six).  I look forward to registering your #6 item at the February meeting, and any of your other UFOs previously drawn and just completed, or not yet selected but finished ahead of time!  The number of UFOers who have completed more than the one per month goal is astounding.  We all, as a group, celebrate with you and your successes!

February Program - Outreach Activity

We will be making Northern Lights quilt blocks. If you could bring:
  • a small snap off knife or fine Exacto blade (as in the picture)
  • a pencil or pen
  • and a 12 x12 inch piece of cardboard or cutting mat that would be great. I have a few but not enough for everyone.
  • If you are bringing a cutting mat, bring a plastic bag that it will fit into. We will be using the cardboard/cutting mat to cut on and then to support the block while we paint on it. The plastic bag will protect your mat from getting paint on it.
  • All the other materials will be supplied by the guild.
You just bring your creative and talented self!

- Sandy

Outreach

Our next Outreach sew day is Thursday, February 14. Won't you be my Valentine (worker bee)? I did think all smooching/lovey dovey stuff would happen on the weekend, so feel free to join us to continue to work on Hospice quilts. There will be chocolate! Last time, we completed a top for Quilts of Valour, and got two more centres made for Hospice. Thank you to Betty Kearns (from Trillium guild) for making 3 more tops for us. They will be quilted in the summer on a long arm blitz again.

In Memoriam
Many of our early members will remember Muriel Taylor. Sadly Muriel  passed away in January at the age of 90. Muriel was accomplished in Celtic and Baltimore appliqué.  In the early guild days, members taught workshops on various techniques. I was lucky enough to attend a workshop on Baltimore appliqué with Muriel. Muriel really enjoyed hand work and I think the calming process in this form of quilting.

Muriel won Viewers Choice in the 1999 quilt show for her beautiful Celtic Quilt. Pictured with Muriel is Eileen Nelson who won for her Baltimore Appliqué quilt, which is the quilt we did in the workshop.

Arrangements were through Low and Low; condolences may be made on their site. Many guild members will always remember Muriel fondly and she will be missed.

- Evelyn
