$43.7M is the average of what 13 of the 14 SEC member institutions received from the league in FY18. Ole Miss was the only outlier as the Rebels got $7.1M less due to NCAA issues. Commish Sankey "was credited with nearly $2 million in total compensation for the 2017 calendar year, including $1.9 million in base compensation. The represents a $100,000 over the amounts reported for him for 2016," per USA Today's Berkowitz. Overall growth: $326M in 2014, $527M in 2015, $639M in 2016, $650M in 2017 & $659.9M in 2018. (link)
Kansas: Two years of ineligibility for MBB student-athlete De Sousa for his connection to MBB-FBI developments. Via the NCAA, "According to the facts provided for purposes of the reinstatement request, De Sousa’s guardian received payment of $2,500 from an agent and booster of the school. He agreed to accept additional payment of $20,000 from the same individual and an Adidas employee for securing De Sousa’s enrollment at Kansas." (link); Jayhawks AD Long: "We are shocked and incensed by today's decision, and we will immediately appeal as this was clearly an unfair & punitive ruling for a young man who had no knowledge of any NCAA violation." (link); KU MBB HC Self: "In my 30-plus years of coaching college basketball, I have never witnessed such a mean-spirited and vindictive punishment against a young man who did nothing wrong. To take away his opportunity to play college basketball is shameful and a failure of the NCAA. Silvio is a tremendous young man who absolutely deserves to be on the court with his teammates in a Jayhawk uniform. This process took way too long to address these issues. We will support Silvio as he considers his options." (link); De Sousa's guardian: "This is bullcrap. It’s like (NCAA officials said), 'Oh we came to that conclusion. What proof do we have? It’s something we heard from court.' You heard that from someone who is going to be in jail for some time. ... That’s why they are punishing a kid? That is pitiful. That’s terrible." (link); CBSSports' Norlander questions why student-athletes continue to get punished for MBB-FBI storylines, but HCs - other than former Louisville HC Pitino - have yet to face significant consequences, "...it also feels like the NCAA is incapable of changing it, even if it wants to. The coaches and programs can wait. We'll just have to see when and if their time comes. The players are the ones forced to take the worst first." (link)
"It’d be a fairly significant impact. It would be about 7 or 8 percent of our budget. It’s not this coming fiscal year; it’d be that same 2019-20 year. But that’s definitely something we’ll have to plan ahead for." That's Missouri Deputy AD/CFO Hickman on the potential FY20 impact from the NCAA penalties handed down to the Tigers. (link); Mizzou FB HC Odom says a number of schools have reached out to a "heavy percentage" of his seniors given the news & possible automatic-eligibility transfers. (link)
New Vanderbilt AD Turner to Commodores fans on his first official day on the job, "Under the leadership of Chancellor Zeppos and David Williams, Vanderbilt Athletics has become an elite athletics program bolstered by a deep commitment to the comprehensive development of student-athletes to excel on the field of play, academically and in life. […] In short order, we will be creating our Athletics Strategic Plan, which -- grounded in what the Chancellor calls the 'Vanderbilt Way' to ensure that our outstanding student-athletes are given every opportunity to excel and succeed in both their academic and athletic pursuits -- will guide the future of our program and serve as an integral part of a new campus-wide capital campaign. I have already initiated a listening tour to gather as much information as I can from our student-athletes, our coaches, our staff, and our wonderful fans." (link)
Sports Illustrated's Niesen writes on how the wave of FB concussion lawsuits could impact the industry, "It’ll be months or even years, and some plaintiffs will settle while others will disappear, bringing 200-plus cases down to 20 and eventually down to just a few. It’s incredibly difficult to prove that the NCAA and individual schools were aware of the risk of concussions and knowingly exposed players to the hazards inherent in football." However, Niesen notes the pure number of cases increases the odds one will win a favorable outcome. Thesis: "The only way college football loses its foothold is if schools can’t afford to put on the pageant that lures the players and hooks the fans—and the most likely reason those funds might dry up is if insurers hike premiums dramatically. One successful lawsuit might start a chain reaction that could make football too expensive to sustain." (link)
Missed this morsel of the N.C. State AD search in yesterday's News & Observer piece from headliner Giglio: Parker Executive Search was paid $120K for its assistance. (link)
ESPN is once again going deep on its Softball coverage during the '19 season with 1,200 available via all its outlets, 125 that will be televised. 20 total conferences are part of the mix. Boise State at Boston College (obviously from someplace warm) will get things going on February 8th. (link); Liverpool FC CEO & former Sega COO Moore: "Ninety minutes is a long time for a millennial male to sit down on a couch. When I look at viewing and attendance figures of millennial males, I’m concerned as a CEO of a football club that relies on the next generation of fans coming through. If we don’t build technological prowess as a club we will lose them. There’s so much pressure on time now and only 24 hours in a day… there are only so many hours to play Fortnite." (link)

Indiana AD Glass calls his MBB program a "serious rebuild" during a Board of Trustees meeting. Further, Glass pointed to concussions being cut in half for FB student-athletes since the Hoosiers spent $175K on custom-fitted helmets. Upgrades to the IU Golf Course & the Terry Tallen FB Complex will be done this year. FY19 budget is $104.766M. Trustee Shoulders pressed Glass on success of MBB & FB, ended his thoughts with "We all understand that patience is going to have its limits at some point." (linklink)
Montana State AD Costello reworks some titles around his office. Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance & Student Services/SWA Bechtold now Senior Assoc. AD for Administration, Assoc. AD for  Business Operations Goossens to Senior Assoc. AD for Business Operations/CFO, Senior Assoc. AD for Development Fox now Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations & Asst. Stadium's Goodman with his latest 'Conference Chain of Command' with the Missouri Valley. Final rankings on the most/least attractive MBB HC jobs in the league based on votes from coaches: Illinois State, Bradley, Northern Iowa, Loyola (Chicago), Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Valpo, Indiana State, Drake, Evansville. Biggest outlier data points vs. final rank: Illinois State #6 in history/tradition, but 1st overall. The Purple Aces #5 in facilities, but 10th overall. (link)
Dallas News' Caplan takes a look at what she calls the "dirty underbelly" of FB recruiting as SMU HC Dykes notes, "It's a real inexact science and the problem with everybody is nobody knows who to trust." Conditional offers, non-binding agreements & non-committal situations are part of the landscape, per Caplan, as the role of social media also impacts how engagements are promoted. Colleyville Heritage (HS) HC Willis: "The offer is verbal, and the commitment is verbal. You have two of these shaky, shaky variables that are working one on the side of the college, and one on the side of the kid." More. (link)
HC Notes: Cal AD Knowlton doesn't seem likely to make a change with MBB HC Jones: "We all need to get better. I need to get better as an AD and a resourcer, I want our coaches to get better in matchups and preparation, and I want our kids to be focused and to play for 40 minutes. We know the future is bright, but we're going to have to grind this year." (link); Lafayette AD Freeman on the hunt for a new volleyball coach as longtime HC Campbell will not return. (link); Nebraska AD Moos removes the interim tag from Brink's title, she will now be the permanent Women's Gymnastics HC three months after taking over for former HC Kendig. (link); Former VMI AC Haught-Thompson returns to Lexington as the new HC of the Keydeys Women's Soccer team. (link); Holy Cross MBB HC Carmody will miss select road games for the remainder of the season to allow him to be with his wife, Barbara, as she undergoes cancer treatment. (link)
Auburn AD Greene profiled by The Shadow League. An interesting nugget from his time at Ole Miss I don't think I've seen/heard/read Greene go into much before, "That was my first time being in someone’s office asking for money. And personally, it was my first time living in the deep south. I had certain notions on what that was like, but Oxford far exceeded my expectations. The people were great. I was calling on people that attended Ole Miss in the ‘60s, which was when James Meredith integrated the school. It was a unique time for someone like me, who wasn’t a Southerner, calling on people who supported segregation when they were teenagers. Now they’re in their 60’s, and I’m a person of color asking them to support their alma mater. There was an evolution that had occurred. I’m so grateful to have gone through that experience." (link)
NJ.com's Politi does not think cutting sports is the right way forward for Rutgers, even after absorbing the College Sports Solutions review & recommendations that came out this past week. Politi: "The volleyball team, an ugly 1-99 in the conference, is the perfect example. I watched one of its matches this fall expecting to see a downtrodden team overwhelmed with all the losing. Instead, I found a group of prideful student athletes trying to do their best for their university in the face of difficult odds. [...] That will take years of fundraising and, yes, some difficult decisions about where to use resources. But the short-term gain of cutting teams is not worth the long-term pain to the university community." (link)
Twelve Women's Soccer student-athletes at Houston have been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, all developing the dangerous medical condition after a workout last week. Strength and Condition Coach Bowens is no longer with the team. Little details available, but here is the statement from UH Exec. Dir. of Media Relations Rosen, "Parents should be concerned, should always be concerned as to whether their son or daughter are getting an education, as to whether their son or daughter is safe when they come onto this campus and our obligation is to make sure that they are. ... University of Houston does everything it can to provide a safe and a healthy working environment. The university’s No. 1 priority is the health, safety and well being of all of our students including our student-athletes." (link)
Utah AD Harlan hopes to break ground after the 2020 FB season on the expansion to Rice-Eccles Stadium, with a completion goal ahead of the 2021 season, thus no season interruption. (link); St. Lawrence has been given the green light to begin its renovation of historic Appleton Arena, opened in 1951, after raising close to $17M for the project that is being completely funded by donors. The first phase of construction will begin following the conclusion of the 2018-19 hockey season and the second phase will start as additional fundraising is completed. Design firm HOK Architectural and construction company Northland Associates have been brought in to help with the project. Georgetown launches a $10M Georgetown Baseball Campaign for Excellence designed around three pillars: scholarships ($6M), facilities ($3M) and coaching excellence ($1.5M). Hoyas AD Reed says $3M in cash gifts have already been received toward the scholarship and field priorities. Reed: "It is thanks in large part to these commitments that we are able to launch this ambitious and important campaign. We hope these partnerships will inspire the larger baseball community to support the initiatives that will transform the experience of our talented student-athletes and coaches." (link)
Also Noticed: The Mountain West will become the first FBS conference to host its own league within the College "League of Legends" season when 10 teams open up the inaugural MW Esports Series today. (link); Caffeine, a new social broadcasting platform that’s backed by 21st Century Fox and Disney, is one of those attempting to take on Amazon's Twitch. Raised $146M since April 2016. (link); The new centerhung at Dickies Arena will be the second-largest continuous display featuring 360-degree playback as one canvas in the country. Trail Drive Management Corp and ANC partner on the deal. (link); Learfield IMG College Minority Academy is now accepting applications for its sixth annual event, which will be in Dallas June 24-28. (link); Former Colorado FB AC Tumpkin pleaded guilty yesterday to third-degree assault of his former girlfriend. Additional charges of second-degree assault were dismissed as part of the pleas agreement. (link); ESPNU lost signal in its coverage of the Penn at Cornell MBB game with 12:15 left in the second half and never regained it. Weird. (link)
