I wonder if you have ever had this experience. As a Christian you frequently are told that an important part of the Christian life is to spend time with God and a great way to do that is by reading his Word. So you finally decide to do so, and so you open up the Bible and read Deuteronomy 22:10-12
Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together. Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together. Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear.

Then you flick somewhere else and read Judges 19:29.
When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

And you are thinking what in the world did I just stumble on? Feeling despondent you want to give it one more try, so you flick again and find a book called Job, you think great a book that might help me with my work problems, but instead you find all this information about this thing called a behemoth and you are asked the question if you know how to pull a Leviathan with a fishhook and you are thinking what in the world is a Leviathan and why does it matter if I can pull it by a fishhook???
And at that point you give up.

Now truth be told that is a fairly extreme scenario I just described, it would be rather unfortunate to stumble across those few passages, but nevertheless for so many of God’s people this type of story rings true. They want to understand the Bible, they want to know God more but they are just not so sure where to start. Maybe for others you just generally avoid the Old Testament and find it old, confusing and irrelevant and stick to what you know.

Friends over the next couple of months we are going to try and help, we are going to try and understand what the big message of the Bible is, what God’s Big Picture is. The plan is to try and give you the tools so that you can confidently pick up your Bible and understand how the different parts of the Bible fit in with the overall story of God’s Rescue Plan. For those of you who want to go a bit more in depth I have two recommendations. First, is to get your hands on a copy of a brilliant book by Vaughan Roberts ‘God’s Big Picture’. Much of the sermon series will be blatantly taken from his book. Secondly, is to come along to one of our home groups where we will have an opportunity to discuss in more depth what we are learning on Sunday about how to understand the Bible.
