POD SAVE WILLIAMS

This January, six students embarked on an audio storytelling journey. In three weeks, they were charged with learning about campus sustainability at Williams, choosing two interesting topics, interviewing people both on and off-campus to learn more, and creating two short and compelling audio stories/podcast episodes that would shine a light on sustainability at Williams, as help us all better understand what we're doing well sustainability-wise as a college and how we can improve. The course, taught by the ZC Assistant Director Mike Evans, included an intro to Williams sustainability... READ MORE
FOOD PRESERVATION

In collaboration with Dining Services, ZC hosted an event that allowed students to see behind-the-scenes in Paresky’s kitchens. Each year, the dining staff preserve their fall bounty, which includes locally sourced butternut squash and Rome apples. Volunteers were exposed to the cutting, poaching, and grinding processes of making raw apple sauce, as well as the seasoning, roasting, and pureeing process of making butternut squash soup. This was a time for both parties to converse on food suggestions, spring menu items, real food goals, and the dining halls’ plans in contributing to Williams’... READ MORE
WANT TO PLAN DINING MENUS?

At the start of January, Mission Park Unit Manager Charlotte Clark, First Cook Dave Berger, and staff from the ZC sat down with students interested in asking questions about and making suggestions for the spring menu cycle for Mission Park Dining Hall.

In May, there will be another opportunity to give input for Mission Park and for Grab N Go. If you are interested in being involved in that conversation, email Mike (mae3) and we'll add you to the list of interested people. We will be in touch by early May!
WASTE AUDIT OF OUTDOOR BINS

We're in the early stages of planning a waste audit of outdoor bins for early March, in conjunction with Professor Kohler's "Our Planet's Plastic Plight" course, and are looking for people who might be interested in helping out. No commitment needed, but email Mike (mae3) if you're intrigued. You can learn more about it here. A waste audit involves putting on tyvek suits and sorting through trash and recycling bins to see what is being thrown where to identify successes and challenges with outdoor waste diversion strategies in order to make changes to decrease waste.

HOW DO YOU GET AROUND CAMPUS?

Tell us your transportation habits!

We have been reaching out to all corners of campus in order to gather information about how Williams’ stacks up to our peers when it comes to sustainability. Every couple of years we report on this using AASHE’s STARS.  We are surveying our community’s transportation habits - please help by answering this one question survey!

FORWARD FOOD EXPERIENCE

Dining Services staff were joined by special guests from the Humane Society for an all-day training on Wednesday, Jan. 23. They prepared some brand new, delicious recipes from Forward Foods (think healthy, vegan & flavor filled). The evening of sampling all of these foods that followed was a great success. This event followed from a successful training held last Spring as part of Eco-Advisor Astrid DuBois’ project. See a video of the first Forward Food Experience here. Please let us know what you thought of this year’s Forward Food event!
