What is rigor in mathematics (really)?

Implementation of multiple mathematics pathways has shown impressive increases in student success — more than three times the success rates for students in one third the time in some programs. With these startling impacts came a widespread concern about maintaining rigor within the discipline.

In response, the Charles A. Dana Center explored the meaning and intention of rigor in mathematics education through a synthesis of interviews with leaders in the field and a review of literature in higher education and K-12. We offer recommendations for a shared definition of rigor and its implications for mathematics curriculum and effective instruction.

Navigating the pathway to calculus

Recent research about how students learn, as well as the conceptual understandings and skills necessary for success, can help us design a more effective and efficient pathway to calculus.

The Pathway to Calculus video series showcases the unique perspectives of an array of national leaders in the fields of mathematics and mathematics education. From discussions of pedagogy and course content to explorations of non-cognitive issues, these videos describe the innovations necessary to re-envision the way we prepare students for success in calculus.
