Transparent Language

Starting in February, people in the IFLS region will have access to Transparent Language, a database of over 100 languages.  IFLS has subscribed to the database, along with several other Wisconsin systems.  This database has some great features, including a crash course in Spanish for library workers, immersion courses in six languages for kids, courses in English and citizenship for English Language Learners, and so many languages to learn.  You can take part in an hour-long live webinar on February 7 at 11 am (these sessions will be recorded, but we don’t have information on where to find the recordings yet).  Here are some other resources that may be helpful to you as you prepare to promote these terrific resources:

Lynda.com

We have had access to Lynda.com for about a month.  Hoping things are going well with promoting this powerful database to your community!  Remember to tune in on February 5 for a 1:00 webinar  to hear about the Whitefish Bay Public Library’s experience using and offering Lynda to their community.  The webinar will be recorded.  On another note, we ran into a wrinkle with using the app, many thanks to Jennifer from New Richmond for bringing this to our attention.  In order to access the Lynda app, here’s what folks need to do:
  1. Open the app --"from LinkedIn"
  2. Select "already a Lynda member"
  3. Select the Organization tab
  4. In the Web Portal section, enter "ifls.lib.wi.us" (no quotes), Log in
  5. A browser page opens where users enter barcode and password

Wisconsin Public Library Consortium more than just OverDrive

Guest post from the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium
What do you think of when you think of the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC)? If you said “OverDrive,” you aren’t alone. WPLC and the Wisconsin Digital Library are almost synonymous for many.
But did you know that WPLC does more than just coordinate the OverDrive collection?
WPLC also… If you’re in a public library that belongs to a public library system, then your library is a member of WPLC. You have a representative on the WPLC Board and Digital Library Steering Committee. If you have any questions about WPLC, please feel free to reach out to them directly or to the project managers at wplc-info@wils.org.
Want to read more about WPLC? Check out the website, the brochure, or join the WPLC mailing list.

Wild Wisconsin Winter Web Conference Follow-up

Even if you attended every session you possibly could during the Wild Wisconsin Winter Web Conference, there were at least 6 sessions happening concurrently, so you have even more great content to learn from.  These webinars are of a national caliber, and focus on concrete, practical, and essential information for library staff!  You can check out the recordings, slides, and handouts here.  New this year:  recordings will be accurately captioned by February 5.

Call for Program Proposals

The 2019 WLA Conference Committee invites you (yes, you!) to share your experience and creativity with the Wisconsin library community at our annual conference, to be held on October 8-11, 2019, at the Kahalhari Resort and Convertion Center in the Wisconsin Dells.   We are seeking an array of programs that will appeal to a wide library audience.  There is already have a great lineup of speakers, but we seek your help to provide a relevant, timely and intentional learning experience at this year’s conference. You can help by offering your knowledge and expertise for a conference session.  Submit a proposal March 1!
