Opportunities & Need to know!
Volunteer Opportunities
Opportunities for all to get involved:
We’re following up on one of the many excellent ideas that bubbled up at the two
stimulating “Brunch at the Hildebrandts” on Jan 13 and 20. One suggestion was that Boards offer a list of short-term opportunities that could be met by church members who are not able to commit to full board membership but are ready to help when they can. Or some may already be members of another Board but can volunteer
occasionally for other activities. Here are some early suggestions; more will follow:
Children’s Ministries welcomes individuals:
willing to be shepherds and/or back-up shepherds for Sunday School,
willing to help with one-time events such as the Polar Bear Bash, VBS, Harvest Fest,
willing to provide food for dinners and luncheons.
Youth Ministries welcomes those willing to be chaperones for youth events.
The Chidester Lecture Committee always welcomes help with luncheons.
The Membership Board welcomes volunteers to help with:
taking Friendship Bread to first-time visitors from the area and/or baking gluten-free bread every 2-4 months for the visitors to take,
being a greeter "regularly" (once a month / once a quarter / once a year.)
Chancel Board opportunities:
join an ushering team (We currently have 9 teams so you would usher once every 9 weeks for the 2nd service.)
help with communion prep—Communion occurs the first Sunday of every month; prep can be done either the prior Saturday afternoon or early Sunday before 1st service.
If you can volunteer a little time to help one of these Boards or Committees, please see: Kathryn Helleman (Faith Formation), Jane Ransom (Membership) or Tom Taylor (Chancel), or a Nominating Committee member (Barb Nye, Sue Crescitelli,Kathy Tashima, Dave Walker, Jim Cummins, Sandy Hauter, Al Compaan).
Recycling notes from the Green Team
Your polystyrene (Styrofoam)generosity has overwhelmed us! So much so that we need to suspend this recycling service. The nearest polystyrene recycling center is in Ann Arbor and we cannot justify the ~100 mile round trip and 3 hours of time just to dispose of a car full, unfortunately. PLEASE DO NOT BRING IN MORE STYROFOAM! Meanwhile, we would welcome help from anyone planning a trip to Ann Arbor. Please know that the Green Team will continue to recycle CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries and hearing aid batteries; however, ALKALINE BATTERIES ARE NOT RECYCLABLE. (You may dispose of alkalines in your trash.) We will continue to collect rechargeable batteries and CFL bulbs, but please know that Lowe’s and other merchants will accept these too.
Adult Ed for the weeks of Feb 3 to March 3
Embracing an Adult Faith” is an exciting, five session adult formation resource for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology. A DVD featuring the well known theologian Marcus Borg, will set the stage for small group discussions in our journey toward clarifying what we believe and living our faith! In the chapel at 9:30.
Got Pain?
On Sunday, February 10, Olivet Lutheran Church, along with other Sylvania Area Congregations, will host the first in a three-part series: Got Pain? The goal of the series is to support our community in finding and engaging resources to manage the physical, emotional, and/or spiritual pain we experience in life. The first session, from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, in the Christian Life Center, will help us explore our physical beings as a resource for pain-management. With the help of Jennifer Dubow, a licensed independent social worker and certified yoga therapist, we’ll explore body movement as a way to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothes for the “practice portion” of this gathering. Light refreshments will be provided following the presentation.
