Dear Methodist Ladies Ministry/Group~
Thank you so much for what y'all did for me and my boys for Christmas. Being laid off is bad, but it's even worse when you're a single parent. The boys had a Christmas because of your church. We know the reason for the season, which is celebrating the birth of Jesus, but having something for Cody and Tyler to open was so AWESOME!!! I did what Pastor Cindy said, and got them something special. It just hasn't gotten here yet. I got Cody's new patches for his letter jacket and got Tyler his letter jacket. I'll send pictures when they get here.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am so glad that the Christmas Season is over. I want to like the Christmas Season and I try so hard to focus on the coming of Christ, but there is just way too much hustle and bustle for me. It gives me a headache, makes me irritable and keeps me from enjoying the good things that are happening around me. Too much tinsel, not enough time with the Word.
The best part about the Christmas Season being over is that Lent will be starting soon. Where Advent and Christmas are my least favorites seasons, Lent and Easter are my favorites. I guess it’s because there is not a lot of Lenten carols or presents to buy or parties to go to or to throw… only an Easter Egg Hunt and dinner on Easter Sunday. Instead of frantic shopping there is study and prayer, times of meditation and reading the Word.
I’m looking forward to Lent and Easter and I hope you are too. We are going to have a Lenten Bible Study and I am hoping an Easter Vigil. There will be more about each of these in next month’s newsletter. I hope you are looking forward to this most wonderful and holy time as much as I am.
In His service,
Patti

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated(https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm) each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs(https://www.cdc.gov/flu/antivirals/whatyoushould.htm) that can be used to treat and prevent flu. The tips and resources below will help you learn about steps you can take to protect yourself and others from flu and help stop the spread of germs.
- Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
- Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
- Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Flu and other serious respiratory illnesses, like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), are spread by cough, sneezing, or unclean hands.
- Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Hand washing resources from the It’s A SNAP program, aimed at preventing school absenteeism by promoting clean hands. From the School Network for Absenteeism Prevention, a collaborative project of the CDC, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Cleaning Institute.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food
Preventing Flu at Work and School
At School
- Find out about plans your child’s school, child care program, or college has if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site.
- Make sure your child’s school, child care program, or college routinely cleans frequently touched objects and surfaces, and that they have a good supply of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs, and disposable wipes on-site.
- Ask how sick students and staff are separated from others and who will care for them until they can go home.

At Work
- Find out about your employer’s plans if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site.
- Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards, and phones, to help remove germs.
- Make sure your workplace has an adequate supply of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rubs, and disposable wipes.
- Train others on how to do your job so they can cover for you in case you or a family member gets sick and you have to stay home.
- If you begin to feel sick while at work, go home as soon as possible.
What additional steps can I take at work to help stop the spread of germs that can cause respiratory illness, like flu?

Emmaus News
There are 3 (possibly 4) women from our congregation enrolled for the Walk to Emmaus Women’s Walk #2 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange, scheduled March 21-24, 2019. The deadline for enrollment is in mid-February--SOON! There is still room but it is filling rapidly. If you may be interested in attending this walk or have questions, please talk to Pastor Cindy or any of the many folks who have previously attended a Walk.
I would like to have those members of Smithville FUMC’s Emmaus community contact me if you would be interested in praying for this walk or helping from home with the many aspects of a successful Walk. Please text me your contact information so that I can start a list and know who wants to be active in this endeavor.
The Cathedral Oaks Emmaus Community has monthly gatherings on the 3rd Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30pm; and they rotate between participating churches in Schulenburg, La Grange, Flatonia and I can’t remember the rest. I plan to start attending these as I have badly missed participating. I hope others will perhaps join me, or even go to candlelight.
Many Thanks. De Colores! Terry Carmack (512)237-0087

WEEKLY PRAYER IN THE CHAPEL
WEDNESDAYS @ 9:30 am
Prayer is a sacred practice that works in ways we can’t even begin to comprehend. As Christians, we have faith in God’s plan, but can you explain the peace or comfort you experience in the midst of grief or trials? Do you ever need a moment in the middle of your busy-ness week to pause and recharge? Come to the chapel and quiet your heart. Prayer is personal. Prayer is powerful. You will find your life enriched as you pray. Suzanne and Neta meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. In this season of Advent, you are invited to recommit and join them in this opportunity to pray and reflect. Come as you are, come when you can.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 NRSV

Another month has flown by which doesn't seem possible. New Hope Respite has continued to grow. We have lost some through moving to facilities and death, but are now up to 10 guests. This is a wonderful service that we provide for the residents of Smithville and outlined areas. Our major problem is that any additional inquiries we get will need to be placed on a waiting list because we are desperate for additional volunteers. Being a volunteer is not hard. It just requires being steady on your feet and having the desire to help your fellow man. We really need YOU but a volunteer could be you or maybe a friend or neighbor. Respite is held on Thursdays from 9:30-2:00. We need volunteers to be faithful to the program but make every effort for you to be off for Doc. appt., vacation, etc. Please come & visit! See what we are doing! You may be very surprised as to how it works. I was. That's why I became involved. Believe it or not, it IS fun and you would be providing a wonderful service to mankind.
There are two seminars which may be of interest either to you or someone you know. The 1st is entitled "Powerful Tools For Caregivers" which is sponsored by St. David's Foundation & the Bastrop YMCA. It is being held at the Elgin TX Library on Wednesdays February 6 - March 13 from 2:00-3:30. Register for this seminar by calling the Bastrop YMCA @ 512-321-9622 from 12-4.
The 2nd seminar is "Lunch N' Learn", sponsored by alzheimer's/Texas. Steve Cato, an administrator in memory care fore over 16 years will be offering the class. He will teach a practical method of communicating that helps reduce stress, enhance dignity & increase happiness in people with memory loss problems. This is being held at New Haven Assisted Living & Memory Care in Bastrop on Friday February 22 from 11:30- 1:00. The class is FREE & lunch will be served. Reservations are required and can be made with Victoria Cardinas at (512) 241-0420X10 or vcardinas@txalz.org if you would like to attend. Many of our volunteers will be attending so I'm certain if you would like to attend, they would be willing to shard a ride. Please share this information with your family, friends and neighbors.
Blessings, Brenda

- Chair John Lube called the meeting to order. Pastor Cindy offered the opening prayer.
- Minutes of November 27, 2018 meeting were distributed for review and approval. Minutes were approved as presented.
- Treasurer’s Report – Courtney presented the Treasurer’s Report, a copy of which is attached hereto and made a part of these minutes. Courtney recommended that we pay the apportionments in a ten-month period rather than twelve to facilitate the accounting. The Board agreed. She distributed the revised budget to include the updated insurance figures. Becky Brooks moved to accept the budget as presented. Doug Floyd seconded the motion. Motion passed.
- New Business – Marcia McClure and Tricia Menasco addressed the Council regarding the Quilt Festival. The 2018 event was a wonderful success. A breakdown of expenses and income was distributed. Some of the funds will be donated for church paraments. $300 will be donated to UMW for their help with the event for their scholarship fund. A portion will be used for quilting supplies. New blinds for the serving area in the Family Activity Center will be purchased and installed. The Council expressed their appreciation for the Busy Bees hard work that benefits the greater church.

Issues other than quality of cleaning have included time spent at the church and the time of day they have been present. We will verify if the cleaning company is bonded. We will notify the current custodial team of our concerns and put out the contract for bid for the new year. The new contract should include additional detail and should include provision for quarterly reviews.
In other Trustee matters, Glenn will work with a contractor to determine what specific repairs need to be made to the sanctuary windows.
Next meeting will be Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.
Pastor Cindy offered the closing prayer. Meeting was adjourned.
