JANUARY UPDATE

Last week's MLK Day of Service was a huge success! Over 160 people came out in freezing temperatures to help us plant 144 trees in the YE Smith Neighborhood of East Durham. In attendance were volunteers from several local groups, including RDU Black Professionals, The Emily K Center, AmeriCorps Alums, United Way, Hillside HS Theta Phi DeltaNCCU, Broadway Veterinary Hospital, TreesDurham, Durham Rotary and many others. Even City Council Member DeDreana Freeman, whose district we were in, made an appearance! Special thanks to Fullsteam Brewery for sponsoring this event.

In addition to our largest tree planting of the season, we also hosted two cleanups the same day with 100 volunteers from the Duke Round Table collecting 1220 pounds of litter, and 30 volunteers from the YMCA collecting 1020 pounds! This is one of our favorite service days of the year, and we're so happy to have had the honor to share it with so many in our community. Check out photos from the day on our Flickr page, and send us a message at info@keepdurhambeautiful.org to organize your own group service event!

Save the Date for Creek Week!

Warmer weather is on its way and it's the perfect time for a little Spring Cleaning! Creek Week is a time to discover and clean up our local streams. It has been celebrated in Durham since 2009, with 2,161 volunteers collecting 129,723 pounds of litter to date. Set for March 16th-23rd, Creek Week offers indoor and outdoor activities to help people of all ages learn more about creeks, rivers, and lakes and how to keep them healthy. This is your chance to help clean local creeks, network and learn how to be a part of efforts by local conservation groups, go on a canoe adventure, tour a water reclamation facility, go on guided hikes, and more! Stay tuned to www.durhamcreekweek.org for an updated schedule of events.

Durty Bull is keeping it clean!

We're proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Durty Bull Brewing Company! Everyday before opening the taproom, the bartenders pick up the litter on Broadway and North Street around the perimeter of the complex. They take pride in taking care of their own little corner of Durham, but they need help - we provide the tools, you provide the power! Every Second Sunday in 2019, you can join us for our Sunday Street Sweep at 11am. Mingle with like-minded members of the community as you make a difference, and keep the conversation going afterwards over a well deserved pint. 5% of proceeds from the taproom and food trucks will also be donated to KDB at each event! What a great way to help us reach our funding goal of $40,000 in 2019 while also making your community a little better. The next scheduled event will be Sunday, February 10th from 11-1.

NC GreenPower Announces Grant

For the past 15 years, NC GreenPower has been working to support local renewable energy and carbon offset projects. The SECU Foundation program renewal will provide a $15,000 challenge grant for up to ten K-12 public schools to assist with the installation of a solar array system on their campus. Submissions for the grant will be due by 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 28, 2019.
