WINTER 2019 NEWSLETTER

DAFFODILS

As we await the return of Wordsworth’s “host of golden daffodils” and the sense of renewal that comes with them, we hope you will take a moment to reflect on the fact that so many of you are helping hundreds of people in need—not just through the remainder of this winter season, but every day of the year ahead. (Please see the testimonials at the end of the newsletter for a small sampling of the concrete help you are providing.)

You contribute to Give a Little in various ways: as monetary and in-kind donors, Business and Professional Partners (please see list below), Sustaining Members, referral and community partners, sponsors of fundraisers, and volunteers.

What you all have in common:

(1) a concern for people who are experiencing hard times and
(2) a willingness to give something of yourself.

You inspire us and keep us going. You live mostly in Yamhill County, but we also receive wonderful support from people living in other counties in Oregon as well as in 14 other states.

We cannot thank you enough for your generosity and commitment to creating a more compassionate community.

For the fifth year, business owners and professionals are joining with us as partners by contributing a minimum of $500 in monetary or in-kind donations over a twelve-month period.  A complete list of those Partners is below; those new to the list appear in turquoise.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all of these business owners and professionals for their invaluable support. If possible, we hope you will patronize them and personally express your appreciation.

Also, please know that we welcome new Partners at any time and would be glad to share further details with you. You may contact us by email at info@givealittlefoundation.org or leave a message for us at 503-857-2964, and we will be in touch with you.

We were extremely fortunate and grateful to receive for 2019 a major grant from the Hillside Foundation to help senior citizens experiencing hardship.

Grants from the Hillside Foundation in the past five years have been instrumental in allowing us to develop and expand an outreach program for the elderly in our community.

The aims of the program are twofold:

a) to assist individual senior citizens, who might otherwise fall through the cracks, with emergency or dire needs, including automobile repairs, tires, and insurance, rental assistance, utility bills, medical and health expenses, and home repairs.

b) to improve the quality of life for low-income seniors by providing small amounts of money to allow both for essentials of daily life they cannot afford—such as gas, groceries, and clothing— and for small treats, especially those that allow for outings and socializing. (A favorite outing is to the local movie theater.)

Through this program funded by the Hillside Foundation, we are learning just how much giving a little can mean in the lives of elderly people who have little or no emergency or discretionary income.

SPECIAL FEBRUARY OFFER

20% of Purchase Price Benefits Give A Little

Youngberg Hill Winery and Inn has established an important connection with Give a Little because of our common interest in providing assistance to homeless students attending McMinnville High School. Youngberg Hill owner Wayne Bailey pledges that 20% of the purchase price of every bottle of 2015 Nicolette's Select sold in February will go to this initiative. "We want to support students who are making the effort to graduate, despite their trying circumstances," Bailey says. "With your contribution, we can play a significant role in their success.”

McMinnville High currently has 70 identified students who are homeless—possibly living in a car, couch-surfing at classmates’ homes, or sleeping outdoors. With your participation, the Youngberg Hill effort provides an innovative way to make things better for young people experiencing this extreme kind of difficulty.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You enabled me to renew my license for massage and that allows me to continue to give quality massages to my clients and provide for my family."

"I would like to share my extreme gratitude . . .for the gas card that I received today. It will enable me to start a new job next week and help to smooth the transition as transportation is a necessity due to the location of this opportunity.  I can’t thank you enough, and when I am able I pledge to pay this kindness forward."

"This scholarship isn’t just an awarded amount of cash. In my eyes, it is my future."

(In 2018, we were pleased to award our third scholarship to attend Chemeketa Community College to a high school graduate who has experienced homelessness.)

The daffodil, which is both the March birth flower and the 10th wedding anniversary flower, is given as a gift (especially in bunches) in order to ensure happiness. We hope you will continue to join with us to bring some level of brightness to people whose lives are in need of blossoms.
