In 1850 there were 11 doctors in Harley Street, by 1863 there was 36. Today there are over 5,000. Sir Joseph Lister, pioneer of wound infection treatment, Sir Frederick Treves, who treated Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man and Florence Nightingale have all lived there.
