Education Faculty & Staff Participate in Racial Literacy Workshop
During the Education Department’s mid-year retreat on January 15th, Silas Pinto and Deborah Donahue-Keegan facilitated an afternoon workshop focused on racial literacy. They shared learning from a three-day intensive institute with Dr. Howard Stevenson, author of the book, Promoting Racial Literacy in Schools, in May 2018. To begin the January workshop, the department watched and reflected on Howard Stevenson’s TED talk, How to Resolve Racially Stressful Situations. After reviewing the read-recast-resolve racial literacy framework, department faculty and staff engaged in small group role-plays drawn from personal experience and ended with a whole group dialogue.

Education Students Receive a Tisch Grant
Students in Professor Erin Seaton's ED191: Identities in Education have been awarded a grant from the Tisch Fund for Civic Engagement. The grant aims to create an interactive installation on campus to allow Tufts community members to reflect on their identities at Tufts. First-year undergraduates and a graduate student in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development wrote the grant application for their final as a way to bring class conversations about identity to the larger community. Congrats, ED191 students!

Silas Raises Money for Cape Verdan Museum
Silas Pinto performed on Martin Luther King and Amilcar Cabral Day at 10Rocks Restaurant in Rhode Island as a fundraiser for the Cape Verdean Museum, the only museum of its kind in the United States. While most are familiar with MLK’s story, the event also focused on Amilcar Cabral, who was involved in the liberation efforts of three African nations formerly colonized by the Portuguese (Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Angola) in the 1970s. Silas performed Areia, which was released in August of 2016, celebrating the Slave Rebellion in Haiti (1791), and a new song to be released April 1st, Badja, spreading awareness of hunger and poverty.

Congratulations, Steve!
Professor Steven Cohen had a chapter recently published in Peacebuilding Through Dialogue: Education, Human Transformation, and Conflict Resolution, edited by Peter Stearns, University Professor and Provost Emeritus at George Mason University. When asked about the work, Steve joked, "I called my chapter 'Teaching History By Talking Together' yet it appears as Chapter 1 in the book entitled Identity, Race, and Classroom Dialogue. I’ll learn some big words one of these days. :)" In all seriousness, it's a thoughtful exploration of challenging moments in the classroom and an illuminating dive into pedagogy. Great work, Steve. Learn more about the book.
