The Lake Observations by Citizen Scientists & Satellites project seeks to better understand how the quantity of water in lakes is changing.

Why Are Lake Levels Important For Wildlife?
Lake water levels play an integral role in the survival of many different aquatic species and communities, so it is important to study these levels to understand the relationship between water levels and wildlife. We spoke with Kevin Dockendorf, Coastal Fisheries Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, to learn more about these relationships.
By the Numbers: We are monitoring 25 lakes in using 31 gauges. To date,
271 citizen scientists have submitted 2168 lake height measurements.  

Using GPS To Study Lakes

Lake height measurements provided by citizen scientists tell us a lot about the lakes we study.  But lake height data can be especially useful when it is compared the elevation above sea level.  Fortunately, we have the ability to measure elevation using Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

Target Monitoring Dates

Any lake height measurements that are provided are useful & help us better understand the lake.  But measurements that are taken on certain days are extra useful because we can pair them with satellite data to determine how the volume of water in the lake has changed.  To find out when these target dates occur for your lake follow the link below.
