There are so many healing stories in scripture; in Matthew’s Gospel, there’s one story after another of Jesus bringing healing and wholeness.
This Sunday we’ll be hearing two of those stories, both about paralyzed people brought to Jesus by friends. In both cases, Jesus praises the faith of the ones who are so invested in the well-being of those who need healing. Isn’t that curious? It’s not the faith of the ones who are healed, but the ones who believe that it’s possible, and who go to the trouble to act.
It leads me to wonder about all kinds of things: about faith, or what it means to ‘have faith,’ as Jesus puts it so often. About friendship, and what it means to ‘carry’ someone who can’t move toward wholeness on their own. And it raises all sorts of questions about what might paralyze us from acting, especially when others are depending on us.
See you Sunday!
