An exoplanet around Barnard's Star

An international team of astronomers believes they have discovered a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting Barnard's Star a mere 6 lightyears away. If true, this would make this exoplanet discovered using radial velocities the second closest to Earth after Proxima Centauri's planet.

iREx at the 2019 AAS

The American Astronomical Society's Winter Meeting recently took place and iREx was there! We held a booth at the Student Fair to showcase our research and graduate school opportunities. Our Coordinator also interacted with JWST collaborators and checked out the latest in educational tools.

Two new researchers at iREx

We are happy to welcome two new postdoctoral researchers to iREx! Dr. Geert Jan Talens, who just received his Ph.D. from Leiden University, will be collaborating with the Canadian Space Agency on the JWST. Dr. Mohamad Ali-Dib, arriving from a postdoctoral position at the University of Toronto Scarborough, is our 2018 Trottier Postdoctoral Fellow and specialises in planet formation and machine learning.

Rendez-vous with MU69

The New Horizons probe, famous for its flyby of Pluto in 2016, celebrated the New Year by visiting 2014 MU69, a Kuiper Belt Object. MU69, now known to be a contact binary, is the farthest object ever visited by a spacecraft in our Solar System to date.

"Astronomer for a Night" Contest

 
Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an astronomer? This is your chance to find out! Win the chance to be an astronomer for one night of observing at l'Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic during the Summer of 2019. The contest is open to all Quebec residents who will be in secondary school in 2019-2020. The deadline to apply is June 15th 2019.
