February 6, 2019

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Well, Phil the groundhog may have called for an early spring, but we certainly aren’t seeing it yet in Seattle!  Thank you to everyone for your flexibility and patience as we navigated the snow and ice the past two days.  In looking at the forecast, it doesn’t seem that we are out of the woods yet.  Should we get more snow this week and/or next, we will keep you updated as soon as we have a plan.  Hopefully you all enjoyed some time with your families and the beauty of snowy Seattle.

We will have our Free Dress Food Drive day tomorrow.  Please send your items in and be sure your kiddos are dressed for the weather!

January was a busy month and February is just as packed.  Friday marks the midterm of the second trimester, as well as the midpoint of the year.  A reminder that we do not send progress reports, so please check Alma to see your child(ren)’s progress.  Alma will be completely up to date by Friday, February 15th.

Next week, we will celebrate the 100th day of school, St. Valentine’s Day, and the start of the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.  Remember, no school February 15-19th.  Please make every effort not to take extra days off.  Per the family handbook, excessive absence is 7 unexcused absences in a school year.

This is also a busy time of year for our Business Office, Finance Council, School Commission, who are hard at work on the budget.  I want to thank them for all of their efforts in working to create a budget that meets the needs of the school and our families.  Our two biggest goals are maintaining a competitive salary and benefits package to keep our highly skilled teachers while remaining an affordable parish school.  Particularly challenging this year are the changes to public school teacher salary scales with the McCleary Act.  We will continue the budgeting process over the next several weeks and, as usual, present the updated budget at our required State of School meetings in March.  Our Finance Council and School Commission put hours of discernment into this process and I am grateful for their thoughtfulness and diligence.

Two great articles for you:

Have a great rest of the week and stay warm!

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Congratulations to our January Student Award Recipients

Volleyball News:
Volleyball registration is now closed and we are now in the process of finalizing coaches and arranging teams. If you are interested in coaching, please do not hesitate to contact Emilie O'Connor (Volleyball Coordinator) or Dylan Pouley.

There will be a volleyball open gym for 5th grade girls, this Friday, February 8th, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.  If your daughter woul dlike to join us, we will have coaches and volunteers at the Assumption Gym to go through some of the basics and help the girls prepare for the upcoming season.

In 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball, the teams are split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. This requires an assessment process that allows assessors to determine the best fit for each player.  Assessments will be held on Monday, February 11, and Wednesday, February 13. In order to be eligible for the varsity team, students need to attend at least one of the assessment nights, and two would be preferred.  The assessors will be looking at the skills of each student and will focus on serving, passing, setting & spiking and court play.  Overall, it's pretty low key and we strive to create an environment that is low stress and lots of fun. Parents are not allowed in the gym to watch the assessments.

Camp ASB 2019...

Camp ASB information is almost ready for publication.  I plan on having that information out for families in next weeks newsletter. We are still working on the summer calendar, and that inormation will not be available until around the start of April. However, registration forms and camp dates will be published next week in the February, 13 newsletter.

This summer, it is most likely, that Camp ASB will return to its traditional  schedule.  We will be open for 7 weeks in June and July, with the month of August closed for maintenance and faculty in-service work.  We are anticipating construction activities over the course of the summer, the same cautiousness in which we entered last summer will also guide our plans for this summer.  I am also happy to announce that Camp ASB will again be partnering with Hoopaholics Basketball to offer a Camp ASB Basketball Camp the week of July 22-26. 2019.
