Featured Painting

REFLECTION, 30x40" 2018

Reflection explores the nature of self awareness. This painting is inspired by a thought experiment about a plant which grows mirrors in the place of flowers. As the sun shines on the mirror plant, the light from one mirror may reflect onto another. In this sense, the plant is gifted with the potential for an intercommunication system.

Real plants have the intrinsic ability to grow towards their most valuable resource, the sun. Plants use light sensitive proteins and live on the circadian rhythm. Is it possible for the theoretical mirror plant to develop an intelligent mirror system ? The mirror system would likely first evolve to match the demands of the plants environment. Over time, would the species alter its growth patterns to respond to its own reflections? Could a plant expand beyond an innate need to survive and recognize its identity?
