Thank You 2018 Annual Fund Supporters!

The Lloyd Center for the Environment thanks all those that contributed to the Center’s 2018 Annual Fund!

The Annual Fund is a critical piece of our operating budget. For the Center to continue to provide the full complement of programs throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, we rely on your assistance and generosity.

Through your tax-deductible Annual Fund contribution, you have partnered with the Lloyd Center in confronting the diversity of environmental issues existing today which will challenge us and generations to come.

Thank you for your support!

Education Internships Available: Spring & Summer 2019

Have a passion for science? Experience or interest in working with youth?

The Lloyd Center for the Environment is in need of Education Outreach Interns for the 2019 spring and summer seasons! Education Outreach Interns assist educators in teaching in-school and field-based science programs. The Lloyd Center’s educational philosophy is that hands-on, experiential learning brings the study of science alive! Additionally, interns assist with various Outreach programs such as story times, guided walks, …, and aquaria maintenance.

An Education Outreach Internship at the Lloyd Center is an excellent way to gain classroom experience, work with live animals, and connect to the local community! If interested in either a spring or summer 2019 Internship, please send your resume and three references to Erika Fernandes at Erika@lloydcenter.org.

Estuary on Wheels in New Bedford Public Schools, Lloyd Center Educator/Naturalist

The pure joy and fascination this program sparks in these youngsters is contagious! Second grade students leave the classroom exclaiming “This was so fun!” and asking, “Will you guys come back next week?!”

Beginning at the end of January, Lloyd center programs are being integrated district-wide across New Bedford second grade classrooms. The integrated program, Estuary on Wheels, allows students to participate in hands-on activities that reinforce Massachusetts state learning standards.  Students discover what an estuary is and how this nursery-like habitat is home to many different types of organisms.  Many students may have heard of or seen estuary animals, like quahog clams, at the beach or on the dinner table but have little idea how these animals live.  For example—they may not realize local clams have a special body part called a siphon which they use to eat their planktonic lunches!

Large crowd attends 28th Annual Gooseberry Island Walk by Jamie Bogart, Lloyd Center Research Associate

Each winter the Lloyd Center provides an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to stretch their legs to kick start the New Year, while learning about the dynamic Buzzards Bay shoreline. While many great locations exist for this event, perhaps none is better than Gooseberry Neck Island in Westport.

Gooseberry, a 73-acre island purchased by the state in 1956 as an addition to Horseneck Beach State Reservation due to a buildup of Hurricane damage, is rich in history and has high wildlife diversity, hiking trails, intricate geology from glacial retreat, and stunning scenic vistas.

Historical uses of the island include sheep grazing, private residential cottage living, and military lookouts, using the World War II observation tower that remains today at the south tip. Although the public currently benefits from a causeway providing vehicle access and a nice walk out, historically there was only a sandbar allowing occasional access at low tide. Upon reaching the far tip, one sees the Elizabeth Island chain to the south, Horseneck Beach to the West, and Allens Pond Sanctuary to the east, along with surrounding waters at any time alive with boat traffic, jumping fish, and depending on the season, seals or waterbirds chasing the fish.
