7) Government makes it easier to get help for home renovations

The provincial government is accepting applications for the 2019 PEI Home Renovation Program and has expanded the eligibility criteria so that more Islanders can benefit.

The program provides grants of up to $6,000 for major home renovations such as electrical, structural, heating, plumbing, and fire safety and up to $8,000 to individuals with a permanent disability for renovations that accommodate their disability.

“Renovation support for Islanders with a modest income encourages improvements to make existing housing more suitable and comfortable. This program has been well received by Islanders and government decided to cast the net a little wider by expanding the qualifying criteria so that more people can access it." - Tina Mundy, Family and Human Services Minister

NEW eligibility criteria:

  • $50,000 maximum qualifying income (increased from $35,000);
  • $200,000 assessed property value (increased from $145,000);
  • Program open year-round;
  • Receive funding every 15 years (changed from once per lifetime); and,
  • New maximum grant scale, based on income, ensures those in greatest need receive proportional funding.
Those who wish to apply, or who have applied in the past and did not receive funding, can go to PEI Home Renovation Programs or call 1-855-374-7366 for more information. Applications can also be picked up at any Access PEI.

Do you know the next Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Mentor?

I am writing because the application period for the 2019 Mentorship program is currently open until February 22, 2019, and we are looking for the kind of qualified candidates that you have in your organization and network!

The Foundation has renewed its programs to put leadership front and centre. The Foundation has always engaged forward-thinking academics as Fellows and Mentors have included many distinguished Canadians. Increasingly, Fellows will be both leading academics and teachers who are engaged with their communities, while Mentors will be innovators and changemakers across sectors who will both advise the Foundation’s doctoral scholarship winners and engage them in experiential learning opportunities.

For more information or to apply, visit the Foundation’s website: Mentorship program

Would you be willing to share our call for applications with your organization and its networks? We would be happy to provide suggested social media posts or text for newsletters.

I would also be delighted to speak with you about the Foundation’s activities to answer any questions you may have.

Best regards, Thom.

11) LEAF Begins Search for Next Visionary Feminist Leader

With the appointment of its Executive Director & General Counsel, Shaun O’Brien, to Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice, we see yet again that LEAF’s litigators, scholars and volunteers are leaders in the development of equality law in Canada and are recognized as significant voices shaping Canadian jurisprudence.

As LEAF celebrates Shaun’s appointment, it has also begun the process of recruiting new executive leadership for the organization. In 2018, LEAF aligned its operational leadership with responsibility for legal work, creating the position of Executive Director & General Counsel. The search to fill this position with a visionary feminist leader able to shepherd LEAF through the next period of growth has already begun.

In the interim, LEAF has developed a plan to maintain program stability and continue to advance the ambitious goals of its current projects. LEAF will be working with the firm CALIBRATE to assist with the executive transition. Dr Elizabeth Shilton, LEAF Chair, will step in on a voluntary basis as Interim Executive Director to manage day-to-day operations, supporting staff and ensuring financial accountability. New projects will continue without interruption as LEAF works to advance substantive equality for women and girls though rigorous feminist legal action.
