JANUARY 2019 EDITION

"I cannot shield you from the challenges you will face.  You will know great loss and danger, but also great joy. You may doubt your instincts in the years to come, but your feet have been walking this path since the moment you were born. We knew it when you came into the world a caulbearer. You've remained between worlds ever since. It's who you are and your destiny. Don't let anyone keep you from it."

Rebecca Bishop, in a letter to her daughter, Diana Bishop, A Discovery of Witches

Happy New Year!

Here's a photo of our first slate when we began filming A Discovery of Witches tv. Every time I see this picture it reminds me of the enormous hope and optimism that accompanies any new beginning.

It reminds me of Philippe de Clermont's words "Endings, beginnings, change." This is the alchemy of life and I wish you all the best in 2019

x Deb

ICYMI @DebHarkness on Twitter:

I think you will see plenty of Philippe in THE SERPENT'S MIRROR when it's finished, and Baldwin is definitely in the book I'm working on now. :)

Caution: this doesn't mean it's Baldwin's book--just that he is in it.

PS. And to those asking if there is any chance we'll get a Gallowglass book someday, I think the chances are excellent.

Without a doubt, the fans of A Discovery of Witches TV are the heart and soul of the show. Along with Matthew Goode--shown here surrounded by the Oxford fan conventicle who happened to be gathered when filming took place!!--they provide the spirit and the magic of the piece.

You've voted for us in the National TV awards, sent tweets and letters, signed up for Sky One and Now TV and Sundance Now and Shudder, you've shared what you loved about the show and what you want next (Gallowglass and more episodes in each series...) and cheered and clapped with us at every step along this journey.

It's time to cheer YOU for all your support and being such an important part of the success of A Discovery of Witches TV. Here's to seasons 2 and 3!
For everyone asking when DVDs of the tv show will be available for purchase in the US, we don't know if or when we can expect those, but we'll let all of you know as soon as there's any news.

I have felt this fear. When I dropped out of high school to attend college ("you are ruining your life"). When I became a Renaissance Studies major at Mt. Holyoke College ("what are you going to do with that?"). When I went to a less prestigious graduate school because I felt a connection to my potential faculty mentors there that I didn't at the larger program ("you are ruining your career"). When I took my first job at a small liberal arts college rather than a research university ("you are ruining your career"). When I decided to become a social historian after training as an intellectual historian ("no one will take you as seriously"). When I decided to publish my first novel under my own name ("no one will ever take you seriously again").

I like being a lion. I like having my own life and not the one others would have had me live. Has it been scary? Yes. Has it been worth it? Yes. #roar

It's the cast and crew of Bad Wolf TV and A Discovery of Witches TV gathered in one epic shot  on the first day of filming series 1 back in 2017! #behindthescenes

Glammed up for the red carpet at the National TV Awards (UK), 22 January 2019

We had an amazing night at the NTAs. Huge thanks to all our fans, who voted for us in astonishing numbers and put us on the short list among some serious competition. Congrats to The Bodyguard and to our fellow nominees Killing Eve, Girlfriends, and The Cry.
ICYMI, A couple of days ago I was on my Facebook author page, live, talking about the NTAs, the year ahead, my goals and how I hope to get there, and my resolutions for the new year. Plus some updates on the recent US/Canada premiere.

An amazing article in the NY Times!

Things warmbloods do that annoy vampires:

1. Loud talking in restaurants
2. Mobile phones in the quiet car on trains (where vampires sit by the way)
3. Require photo IDs
4. Ask too many personal questions
5. Saying they like steak rare when they mean medium

I loved this article: "A Medievalist's Guide to Magic and Alchemy in A Discovery of Witches!"

Here's a peek between takes and behind the scenes. Over the long course of filming, work colleagues become more like family.

This photo captures one of those moments when the kindness of Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode made all the difference and they demonstrated the super-power of empathy, just hanging out and distracting me. As you can see, Teresa is a great storyteller. She had me spellbound! I had just buried my godmother and flown halfway across the globe to be back on set for some scenes that were very important to me. The cast and crew were so warm and made a very difficult time easier. ♥️

“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.”
~ Mary Oliver

Thank you for these words Mary Oliver. May you be wrapped in light.

Borage.  I took this photo when I was in the Auvergne, exploring Matthew's world, the autumn before the publication of A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES.
