$367,000 Grant for the Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park

Historic Ithaca and the City of Ithaca have a received a $367,000 New York State Grant for exterior restoration of the Cascadilla Boathouse in Ithaca's Stewart Park!  Announced in December 2018, the funds were awarded from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation/Historic Preservation Development Program as part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's highly competitive Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) Initiative. Former Village trustee Diana Riesman was instrumental in helping to initiate and secure the state REDC grant for exterior restoration of the Cascadilla Boathouse.  In her role as executive director of the Wharton Studio Museum and board president of Friends of Stewart Park, Riesman has long pushed for improvements to revitalize Stewart Park.  In 2013, Wharton Studio Museum led the effort to design and install interpretive signs on each of the park's historic buildings, including the historic Boathouse.  The Boathouse award follows closely on the state grant that Riesman helped win through State Senator Tom O'Mara's office to fund restoration of the former Wharton Studio building in the park.  Riesman's passion and tenacity are helping to ensure that Stewart Park's historic resources are preserved as part of ongoing efforts to maintain this vital community space. For more information, please visit http://www.historicithaca.org/2019/01/24/cascadilla-boathouse-grant/

Fun Festivities for February

Winters in Ithaca can be cold and snowy but there are also a lot of fun activities which happen during these shorter days of the year.  Along with the traditional options of sledding, skating and skiing, the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce keeps a list of activities which are happening in Ithaca and can be a great source for information.  Activities this month include the 21st Annual Downtown Ithaca Chili Cook-Off, a cooking class at Coltivare, and the festival of Fire and Ice.  Cornell Cinema is a great place to check out recently released movies and has both student and senior rates.  Did you know that Ithaca, NY has more restaurants per capita than New York City?  Ithaca is Foodies Culinary Tour "The Science of Taste" takes place February 9th through April 27th; click here for some more restaurant ideas!  The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, The Museum of the Earth, and The State Theatre all have fun events to check out this month.  So put on your boots, bundle up, and enjoy our wonderful community this winter!
