Louisiana’s 50-year Coastal Master Plan represents a unique opportunity to save critical wetlands that have been disappearing for decades due to natural disasters, rising sea levels and the straightjacketing of the Mississippi River.

As part of our commitment to helping rebuild and strengthen the Gulf Coast, we are announcing the appointment of marine scientist Don Boesch as a Walton Family Foundation Fellow, tasked with developing a science-based vision for a successfully restored and sustainable Louisiana coastline.

One of the nation’s leading experts in the restoration of coastal ecosystems, Don is a former president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and Vice Chancellor for Environmental Sustainability for the University System of Maryland.

He is also a native of New Orleans whose early exposure to the bays and bayous surrounding his hometown sparked a lifelong passion for protecting the region, its environment and communities.

“If we have a clear vision of what the sustainable future of the Gulf Coast might be,” Don says, “it can provide a better compass to guide our restoration efforts.”
