Notes from the Board
February 2019

_______________

While it's easy to find community at Daily Co-op, it's sometimes difficult to feel connected to a larger cooperative movement at our tiny store in the heart of the Deep South.

As new board members, myself and Tina were sent to the French Broad Grocery Co-op in Asheville for a Cooperative Development Services (CDS) workshop. There we met two co-op general managers and twenty other brand new board members from ten other cooperatives in the region.

The representatives from CDS lead us through fundamental skills for healthy board management. We learned how to effectively use policy governance to create clear metrics to hold accountable & support general managers.

The most valuable part for me was seeing a snapshot into other cooperative boards and meeting other passionate leaders. Seeing how Daily fits into a larger web gives me a more robust appreciation about the inner workings of Daily as both a board member and a shopper.

Athen's 2019 Social Justice Symposium

Athen's annual Social Justice Symposium was hosted by the Unitarian Universalist church on January 26th. The panels were all deeply informative and interesting! A couple members of the Daily team were involved. Brandon Bubb, board member, hosted a talk on Racism in the Local Food Movement. Our Finance and Human Resources Coordinator, Matthew Epperson (of Georgia Cooperative Development Center), hosted a panel on the future of local economies.
Here's what Matthew had to say about his panel:
_________________

For 2019’s Social Justice Symposium we at Georgia Cooperative Development Center presented 4 great panelists on the theme: “An Athens Economy That Works for More Folx”. After some introductions to what is an economy (just think of a circle that links together land, labor, capital, reuse/disposal and worldview) I contrasted the dominant extractive economy of today (think take, make, waste) with a future economy of regeneration and reparations (solidarity and intersectionality) dominated by cooperatives and other democratic players. To help think about that future, I invited some Athenians who are pre-figuring that future economy: Kara Brown (our beloved GM!) of Daily fame, Almeta Tulloss with Cherokee Moon Mixology, Greg Wagstaff with Swadeshi Co-op, Zack Godfrey with B Lab UGA, and Patrick Davenport with Peachy Green Clean Co-op [Zachary with Normal Landscape Co-op was unable to join us]. We shared some of what’s working (empowered workers, local value chains that strengthen the Athens community keeping dollars local) and what’s most challenging (poverty at 37% in ACC, lack of capital access and co-op education, missed opportunities to collaborate across silos like UGA with the community, racism, among others), and discussed if building more co-ops was a kind of reparations. It was a lot to do in an hour! If you’d like to hear the audio, you can follow this link to listen to the whole recording
In the month of January, we were able to raise  $512.41 for the Food Bank of Northeast Ga and Wholesome Wave! Once that money was split $256.20 went on to provide approximately 1,024 meals through the Food Bank. That's incredible!!
This month's recipient, alongside the Food
Bank will be Athens-Oconee CASA. Check them out!
Local eggs from Bloodroot Collective are here!
They're direct from the farmer, so just ask a cashier to grab a carton from the back & enjoy! Since they're being sold directly from the farmer, local eggs are a cash only product.
