What a month! Last Saturday's soiree was splendid and sparkling. When I accepted the Business Person of the Year award, knowing that although I stood with my knocking knees onstage by myself, none of this would have possible without each of YOU supporting this business-- thank you so, so much.
                 Be My Guest!
As the owner was last year's winner,
it's altogether fitting to host a
Thank You Open House

It's a super day for so many,
I'd be bowled over if you found the time to stop by for pizza and hugs-- if not, don't worry, we'll find plenty of reasons to make merry together in the year to come!

An Evening with Maxine Gordon at Mills College

Perhaps you've noticed that jazz is our constant accompaniment here at Books on B.
If you love listening to the music at our shop while browsing, then consider this celebration of the life of international tenor saxophone player Dexter Gordon.

Joined by a panel of jazz enthusiasts, his widow, Maxine Gordon, will discuss her new book, Sophisticated Giant, at Lisser Hall, the new performance theater at Mills College. For more details and tickets, go to https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4031873
                             February Staff Picks!

Sarah and Jenny have each selected a book to share with you!
Jenny's Pick:
When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon; paperback $11.99

Celebrate Valentine's Day with a book full of false starts, Grand Gestures, and banter that will make you laugh and swoon. I felt especially invested in this story because it features two first-generation Indian-American teens as the romantic leads. Dimple Shah loves to code and wants nothing more than to excel at Insomnia Con, a summer computer science program. Bonus: she'll get away from her overbearing parents who want to find her an Indian husband. Rishi Patel has faith in arranged marriage since it worked out so well for his parents, and is excited to meet the unsuspecting Dimple and see where things go. As the oldest sibling, with a wayward younger brother who bucks tradition, Rishi feels torn between pursuing his love for drawing comics and studying computer science, which would lead to a more stable future. Menon provides us a witty, culturally specific story about two young people going through the universal experience of falling in love and balancing one's dreams with family expectations.

Sarah's Pick: Tell the Machine Goodnight by Katie Williams; hardcover $25.00

If you are a fan of the Netflix series, Black Mirror, you will love Katie Williams’ debut novel. Set in a future San Francisco, the story follows a delightfully real cast of characters, all in pursuit of happiness. At the center of the novel is “Apricity”-- a technology, guaranteed to reveal each individual’s path to contentment (for a fee). Pearl, a contentment technician for the Apricity Corporation who wants nothing more than to cure her son’s emotional disorder sets the narrative in motion, but the compassionate narrator does not remain with her for long. Instead, the story unfolds from the perspectives of those whose lives Pearl seeks to improve, constructing an engaging network of Apricity’s influence. Combining the futuristic San Francisco of Charlie Jane Anders’ All the Birds in the Sky with the skillful characterization and social commentary of E.M. Forster’s Howards End, Williams’ Tell the Machine Goodnight is a story that is sure to surprise and delight.
Announcements
Last Friday, the shop and the world suffered a great blow, as a great human being and supporter of the shop, Thomas Page, died suddenly from a massive stroke far too young.
Generous while he was with us, he continued to give by being an organ donor, and has made others and science that much better for it.
He's inspired me to enroll as a donor, and I'd like to encourage you to do the same:
Register as an organ and tissue donor through Donate Life California and help save lives!
