FRIDAY LETTER

Winter Storm Warning
Brace yourselves as we prepare for an anticipated high rain and wind event again this weekend.  Much like the storm that hit two weeks ago, this storm is expected to hit late this (Friday) evening and last through Saturday night.  Our City is preparing for the storm by staffing additional Fire, Police, Public Works and CERT Team members to address storm related calls.  We're also in contact with PGE as outages may likely occur.  We encourage everyone to sign up for AlertMontereyCounty.org to receive important emergency information.

We have spent most of the day preparing for the storm.  All drains are clear and open.  We have over 100 full sandbags available in the PW yard plus the public sandbag station at the Youth Center.  We'll be tracking any road closures and down trees/limbs of course.

Highlights of a call with Monterey County OES from our Chiefs are that the forecast continues to include very high winds and significant rain. We can expect the following:
Friday-Saturday
Brunt of storm to hit 11pm to 4am; Winds up to 40mph with possible gusts to 60mph; 1"-1-1/2" of rain
Saturday into Sunday
Wind gusts up to 50mph; Thunderstorms; 1/2"-1" of rain
The storm will likely cause numerous and widespread power outages. Because of safety, PGE will not do aerial work (restring lines) if the winds are above 30 mph, so the outages could last a while.

Director Wright and I have decided to shutter the library tomorrow (Saturday) and reassess Sunday hours after the brunt of the storm passes.

New Beach ATV
The City Council recently approved the purchase of a new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) to be used by the Public Works and Police Departments for beach maintenance activities, City-sponsored special events, beach patrol, and public safety emergency response. This new ATV replaces one that was worn, rusty, and in need of extensive repairs. The ATV will be particularly helpful during the busy summer seasons for maintaining the fire pits and accessing other areas of the beach for enforcement and landscape maintenance.  OK, OK already, yes, we admit it, it’s a cool looking as well!

City Hall Composting
Food waste collection was set up in City Hall this week. Staff in the Administration and Community Planning and Building Departments are now able to deposit compostable coffee cups, utensils, and food waste for recycling instead of throwing these items in the trash. Collected food waste gets composted at the Monterey Regional Landfill in Marina. From there, the compost is sent out to orchards and farms for reuse. Tim Flanagan of the Monterey Peninsula Waste Management District and Environmental Compliance Manager Agnes Martelet will be making a presentation to the City Council on February 5th regarding the upcoming state mandates, and the latest trash, recycling, and composting initiatives. We hope to see you there.

There is No Place like Home
This week, the facilities maintenance team built a custom redwood home for the Del Mar Beach restroom backflow preventer. This will prevent the backflow device from constantly being buried with sand.

Zip Books are now available at the Harrison Memorial Library
Great news for library patrons!  If the library doesn't have the book you want, you may now request a book (regular print or large print), or a book on CD that is available for $35 or less through Amazon Prime.  Library staff place the order and the item is mailed directly to you. When you are done with the item, just bring it to a staff member at one of the Library’s Information Desks.

A valid library card is required to participate and you can only request one Zip Book item at a time. The Zip Book item must be properly returned before you request another. The request may be for children, teen, or adult books written in English, Spanish, Chinese, or Korean.

Zip Books is a partnership between the California State Library and the NorthNet Library System. It is supported with both California Library Services Act funds.

AT&T Pro-Am
Public Works has begun an ongoing landscaping cleanup and improvement program along several main corridors in the City. With the AT&T Pro-Am coming up, we improved this island near the parking stalls off of Ocean Avenue and Casanova Street, as an example. Similar improvements will continue through the US Open Golf Championship coming to Pebble Beach in June.

Bob Harary’s Office

Most people never know what goes on in the mind of a Public Works Director (fortunately). For example, take Cleve Waters who was having a very important conversation with Bob about one of his projects while Bob was thinking: 'WOW, look at those antlers coming out of Cleve’s head!'  Superintendent Rob Culver also looks quite dashing with antlers.

New York Times online from the Library
We are excited to announce that complimentary online access to The New York Timesboth current and historicis now available to library cardholders.  You can access it from within the library, or from anywhere else, by choosing New York Times under Articles and News from the library's list of resources.  While you're there, check out all the other great resources your library has to offer!

Tree Quiz
During the recent storm, a Chinese Elm tree was uprooted and damaged the sidewalk on Ocean Avenue, between Lincoln and Monte Verde Streets.  This week, Public Works’ Jaime Aquino and Tom Lang removed the tree and rotted stump and replaced the adjacent sidewalk pavers. Green thumbs Kelley Green and Michael Feher followed up and planted a new tree.

Quiz:  What type of tree was planted?

A) Monterey Pine
B) Oak
C) Chinese Elm
D) Eucalyptus
E) Monkey Puzzle Tree (yes this is a real tree)
F) Two sticks held up by a dead branch

Library Director Training
Library and Community Activities Director, Ashlee Wright, will be participating in a professional development program for Pacific Library Partnership (PLP) library executives beginning early in 2019 and continues throughout the year, that builds and deepens the problem-solving skills and peer networks of participants in a confidential and non-competitive environment.

Be safe this weekend, Village.  Call if you need us.  Take extra care.  Oh, the tree is a Chinese Elm.
