New grant for Australian defence exporters
Defence-related small and medium sized businesses may be eligible for a grant of up to $150,000 in matched funding to invest in projects that overcome barriers to export opportunities. The new Defence Global Competitiveness Grant, which was foreshadowed in the Defence Export Strategy earlier this year, was launched in early January by the Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP. The grant will contribute to building a stronger, more sustainable and globally competitive Australian defence industry.
Professor Tanya Monro has been appointed Chief Defence Scientist. Professor Monro is currently Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President of Research and Innovation and an ARC Georgina Sweet Laureate Fellow at the University of South Australia. She has an extensive background in science, innovation and strategy, and has researched across areas including manufacturing, telecommunications, defence and health. Professor Munro will take up her new position in March.
Defence Industry and Innovation - the place to meet at Avalon 2019

The Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC), Defence Innovation Hub and Next Generation Technologies Fund are joining forces at Avalon, along with representatives from the Australian Defence Export Office, Naval Shipbuilding College and Defence Skilling and STEM. Come and talk to us about building your business, exporting and innovating in the defence industry.
We are running a number of specialised briefing events throughout the program, including a panel discussion with members of the CDIC Advisory Board on the Avalon theme of partnerships and programs, and the implications for defence industry.
We're also pleased to offer small and medium sized businesses access to our four meeting rooms at Avalon. Rooms will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and bookings are essential.
Avalon 2019 will be held at Avalon Airport in Victoria from 26 February to 1 March. Defence Industry and Innovation will be exhibiting in Hall Two, stand number 2D29. We look forward to seeing to you there.

WA universities to co-host space technologies symposium
Four universities in Western Australia will co-host a major space technologies symposium in March in partnership with the Next Generation Technologies Fund. The keynote speaker will be former NASA space shuttle commander Pam Melroy.
Export-ready companies can submit an expression of interest to showcase their products and services with Team Defence Australia (TDA) at Sea Air Space in Maryland, USA on 6–8 May 2019. Participating companies will also be invited to attend the 6th annual G’Day USA US-Australian Dialogue on Defence Industries in Washington DC on 9 May 2019.

Showcase your business at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference
The Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) will be held in Tampa, Florida, on 20–23 May 2019. Expressions of interest are now open for export-ready companies wanting to showcase their products and services on the Team Defence Australia stand at SOFIC.
An Indigenous Business Trade Fair will be held in Canberra on 12 February. It’s your chance to meet around 80 Indigenous businesses servicing the ACT and meet with CDIC representatives to discuss defence industry opportunities. If you’re looking to engage more Indigenous businesses in your supply chain, you can register for this free event.
Canberra defence industry networking and exports session
The Australian Defence Exports Office and Defence Export Controls will present at a Canberra defence industry networking and information session on 11 February. Hear about export opportunities and requirements, and take the opportunity to network with ACT Government representatives and ACT Defence Advisory Board members.
Last call for proposals: enhancing stealth of underwater vehicles
The Next Generation Technologies Fund is inviting universities and industry to submit proposals for new acoustic materials to make underwater vehicles harder to detect. Successful proposals are expected to receive funding of up to $150,000 per year for up to three years.
