Pastor's Message

On Commitment

As we look ahead to our Congregational Annual Meeting (next Sunday, 2/10, at 10:15 a.m.) we each have an opportunity to think once more about our commitment to our community of faith and its many and varied ministries.

According to Webster, commitment means:
1.    The state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, pledge or undertaking.
“I cannot make such a commitment at the moment.”
2.    An engagement or obligation that restrict freedom of action.
“My business commitments prevent me from booking a cruise this winter.”

In life, we’re called upon to make many commitments, some of which are pretty inconsequential, while others are anything but.

Have you heard the one about the chicken and the pig?

A chicken and a pig were walking down the road together. They spotted a billboard for a local diner, advertising its breakfast special: Ham and Eggs - $4.95. The chicken lamented, “That’s our whole contribution to society—breakfast food!” To which the pig replied, “For you, it may be a contribution. For me, it’s a total commitment!”

Another similar example of total commitment is something I learned a few years ago on my trip to Egypt. When we visited the “Valley of the Kings,” we saw the interiors of several tombs of ancient Egyptian kings—some dating back more than 5000 years. These tombs were complex and ornate—clearly no expense was spared in their construction. Not even human lives were spared. Because so much gold, silver and precious jewels were buried with the kings, the tombs were targets for thieves. So, to prevent looting, kings began to have their tombs built in a secret location. Often taking decades to complete, construction work typically started at the beginning of a king’s reign.

While it was surely an honor to take part in the building and decorating of a king’s tomb, the “ultimate” commitment was required by the workers. Since they were among the very few who knew the location of the tomb, the workers who built it were killed after its completion, lest they let slip the secret location. Talk about a total commitment to the job and to the king!

Don’t worry—no one at COR is expecting such a level of commitment as that of the pig, which became our breakfast bacon or ham. Nor are you expected to make a commitment of the kind made by the builders and craftsman who constructed the tombs of ancient kings in Egypt—knowing that when their work was completed, their lives would end.

Commitment, though, does contain an element of self-sacrifice. Whether it’s your valuable time, your valuable talents or your valuable financial resources—and hopefully, all three—being a disciple of Jesus who belongs to Church of the Resurrection calls you to give of yourself and your treasure. It’s committing to deepen your own discipleship and to support the ministries that serve COR, our communities, and beyond.

I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to those who make their commitment to being a disciple of Christ Jesus and supporting the ministries of COR in generous ways. And I’d like to give a word of encouragement to those who have been hesitant to commit to such support to take the leap. Generous giving is a “mark of discipleship,” which you’ll be learning more about in weeks to come.

Let’s make 2019 a year of making and honoring commitments to our personal discipleship and to the support of COR’s ministries—and may the years to come exemplify a deeper commitment to all to which we are called by Jesus.

In Christ’s service,

Our Faith Community

The Safe Babies Healthy Families program's mission is to support families to ensure safe and healthy children through education, support and resources — ultimately ending destructive cycles that can last for generations. We offer prenatal services, childbirth education, parenting programs and play groups. Individualized case management is provided through home visits until the child is kindergarten-ready.
To achieve this, we use a compassionate, holistic approach to mentor and assist at-risk families to create health, social and financial supports. These supports are critical to a safe and stable future. We match parents with a caring professional who acts as a life coach to help them build skills and embrace opportunities that will create lasting, positive change. Ideally, we start working with clients during pregnancy — a critical time to address concerns and needs before the baby arrives to a period of crisis.
Our families remain in our program voluntarily until their child is kindergarten-ready. By partnering with parents who have endured hardships, we celebrate their success as they change the future of their children.

We strive to:
•    prevent child abuse and neglect
•    provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
•    increase parent knowledge of early child development and improve parenting practices
•    increase children’s school readiness and success.

The Word for Your Week…
The reflections/questions relate to the highlighted passage for the day.

Prayer for your Week
Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

Sunday, February 3:      Jeremiah 1:4-10    1 Corinthians 13:1-13        Luke 4:21-30
Jeremiah asserted that he was too young to be of service to God. What excuses have you used to try to say “No” to God’s call(s) in your own life? Do you truly believe your excuses? Does God?

Monday, February 4:     Psalm 56         1 Kings 17:8-16    1 Corinthians 2:6-16
The widow of Zarephath was asked by Elijah to trust that God would provide for her and her son, despite their desperate circumstances. Have you ever needed to trust God in such a ‘real life’ way? Could you trust God as the widow did? Why or why not?

Tuesday, February 5:     Psalm 56         2 Kings 5:1-14        1 Corinthians 14:13-25
The psalmist is in a place of danger, in the presence of his enemies. Nonetheless, he puts his full trust in God Most High, and declares that he is not afraid. Do you think that your faith would make your fearless if you were in the psalmist’s position? Explain.

Wednesday, February 6:     Psalm 56         Jeremiah 1:11-19    Luke 19:41-44
In this passage, Jesus laments the fact that his people (Jerusalem) refused to accept him. Have your loved ones ever broken your heart? Have you broken your loved ones’ heart? Have you been able to reconcile? How?

Thursday, February 7:     Psalm 138         Numbers 20:22-29         Acts 9:19b-25
King David gives thanks and praise to God in this psalm. In verse 3, David says, “On the day I called you, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.” Have your prayers always been answered so quickly—on the very day that you called out to God? Do you consider the strengthening of your soul to be an answer to your prayer? Explain.

Friday, February 8:         Psalm 138         Numbers 27:12-23        Acts 9:26-31
This story, which follows the conversion of Saul/Paul, points out the great importance of having someone to vouch for you—to confirm that your story is true. Have you ever needed someone to do this for you? Did you have such a person? Have you every vouched for someone else? How do you see God at work in such situations?

Saturday, February 9:     Psalm 138        Judges 3:7-11         Luke 4:4:42-44
In this short passage, Jesus shows that he is committed to his mission: to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to other cities; for I was sent for this purpose. How do you discern God’s mission for your life? Are you as determined to fulfill it as Jesus was his? Explain.
