“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler

A Message from the Director of Diversity Education

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with gratitude and excitement that I share that I will be leaving my role as founding Director of Diversity Education at the end of February.  I am looking forward to pursuing a new opportunity outside of Wake Forest, and I will deeply miss this community.

When I relocated to Winston-Salem thirteen years ago, I was making a leap of faith and had no idea that I would become a part of the Wake Forest community or that it would become such a big part of my life.  I started this incredible journey as the executive assistant to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer where I had the opportunity to feed my passion for team building, problem-solving, community engagement, and organizational change. So much so that I created the GateKeepers (iLab) Workshop Initiative in 2009, while still working in the CFO's office, and served as the volunteer manager of the program until 2012 when I became the founding Manager of Diversity Education in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion.  Becoming an official member of the ODI leadership team in 2012 allowed me to actualize my passion for helping others increase self-awareness and challenge barriers to success.

Since 2009, I have led the Office of Diversity & Inclusion in offering more than 400 workshops and programs and engaging over 7,000 faculty, staff, and students in cultural competence education in group and individual settings.  I have also had the privilege of collaborating with countless colleagues throughout the Wake Forest community including the Law School, Residence Life & Housing, Z. Smith Reynolds Library, Athletics, School of Divinity, University Advancement, School of Business, Facilities & Campus Services, Global Programs and Services, Department of Education and more.

The support, collaboration, and inspiration that I’ve received from my colleagues in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Intercultural Center, LGBTQ Center, and the Women’s Center have expanded my capacity as an advocate and my heart as a global citizen.  Moreover, our students have challenged me to be more courageous and creative than I’ve ever been before.  I leave knowing that I have helped to make Wake Forest a better place and that I have become a better person in the process.

I could not begin to name the individuals within this community who have trusted me with their truth, affirmed my contributions, challenged me to fight harder or supported me in any way.  So, I want to thank all of you for your presence because you belong here, for your participation in our programming, and for your persistence in pursuing equity over order.  I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can before my departure, and I am sure that I’ll see you around town.

In the words of Dr. Maya Angelou, she who said everything best, “Continue.”
