"With your help, we made Nepal a kinder place for animals."

January highlights
Animal Nepal's donkey sanctuary moves to Dukuchhap
After 10 long years, We said goodbye to our donkey sanctuary in Godavari and have now moved to our own land in Dukuchhap, Lalitpur. All of our animals have been moved to the new shelter and even though they were a little bit tired from the journey, they cheered up as soon as we arrived in Dukuchhap as they had a lot of space to run around in. Surprisingly, the journey was most difficult for our two resident dogs Bunu and Lucky - they really didn’t enjoy traveling in the car! Once we are fully set up, as with the Godavari Donkey Sanctuary, members of the public will be welcome to come for visits and get to know our four legged friends. A big thank you to our partners Animal Aid Abroad Australia, Gloria Briggs, Susanne Briggs, Lisbeth Star and Phoebe Star.
Humane Dog Population Management Program in Lumbini

Despite being one of the holiest places in the world as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - Lumbini with a growing stray dog population coupled with a lack of adequate veterinary care meant that the stray dog population in Lumbini were susceptible to illnesses, injuries and mistreatment. As part of our Humane Dog Population Management Program, our team led by Dr Sunil Thapa were in Lumbini for the last few months conducting CNVR camps in six of the thirteen wards in Lumbini Cultural Municipality. Under this program, the team operated on and vaccinated a total of 400 dogs (226 female and 174 male). Animal Nepal would like to thank Dogs Trust, Lumbini Social Service Foundation, Lumbini Cultural Municipality and the people of Lumbini for their help with this program.

Animal Aid Abroad 2019 tour group visits Animal Nepal
This month the Animal Aid Abroad 2019 tour group visited our new donkey sanctuary in Dukuchhap and our dog treatment center in Chobhar. The visitors very much enjoyed spending time with our four legged friends, as well as learning more about the work we do. They also kindly provided weatherproof rugs, medical equipment and some monetary donation for the sanctuary and treatment center.
Beginning of the brick season
December marks the onset of the brick season, therefore our Working Equine Outreach Team have been busy visiting brick kilns in Lalitpur and Dhading districts to provide treatment for injured and sick working equines, doing mapping exercise to take stock of the number of working animals this season and conducting awareness workshops and training on animal welfare. Alongside this, the equine outreach team have also been continuing this work with the mountain mules in Gorkha district.

Saying goodbye to Baaje
Baaje (Grandad) is an elderly dog that had an injury on his hind leg from a vehicle and was one of our longer term residents at our treatment center. During his stay, everyone became very fond of this gentle and good humored dog. When he was released back into his neighborhood, we felt sad and somewhat nervous but it was very heartwarming to see him wagging his tail once he saw familiar faces. Take care Baaje, we will miss you!

Animal Nepal in the media
For 2019, Animal Nepal aims to make animal welfare a part of the mainstream conversation. To achieve this, with the help of The Donkey Sanctuary UK, we have produced a nine-part docu-series called A voice for the voiceless, which is aired on channel AP1 on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 pm. The series talks about animal welfare in Nepal and looks at the suffering experienced by working and other animals. The program is also available to watch online through our YouTube channel.

Animal Nepal also has weekly radio show called Conversations about animal welfare, which airs on 97.5 Image FM, every Friday at 9.05 pm.

We were also covered by The Kathmandu Post (a national daily), about adoption of stray and abandoned dogs. They visited our treatment center and took photos of our furry friends, which can be viewed here.
