In just over two months we will be enjoying the 16th Annual Word on the Lake Writers' Festival. This is a festival for all writers and readers. 'Word on the Lake' runs from Friday evening, May 10th through to Sunday, May 12th, 2019.

Askew’s Foods Word on the Lake Writing Contest is open to all writers 18 years and older. All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the deadline.
The judges of the writing contest are Gail Bowen; Fiction, Deanna Kawatski; Non-Fiction, and Nancy Bell;  Poetry. The winners will be feted at the Saturday night banquet, May 11, 2019.

All submissions must be emailed and received by midnight February 28, 2019. Please note that paper submissions are not accepted.  Click here to download Contest guidelines and other information.
We are excited to announce our list of fantastic presenters for the 2019 Word On The Lake Writers’ Festival.

Kat Montagu is a writer, producer, script analyst, story editor and teacher. She has a BFA and an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC. Her scripts have won a Praxis Centre for Screenwriters Fellowship, provincial development funding and a BC Film Feature Screenwriting Internship, Semi-finalist for Page International (for a TV Pilot). She wrote for the television series Alienated. She has been a feature film and TV pilot story editor for many years for produced projects like Level 16 and Once There Was a Winter. She also worked in script development for the series Arctic Air. Read more about Kat here.

Louis Thomas is a Neskonlith Elder and councilor, and son of the late Mary Thomas. He continues to build on his mother’s legacy of inclusiveness by building indigenous-settler relations that lead to a better understanding of Secwepemc history, and a better world. Louis is a consummate storyteller breathing life into his aboriginal culture. As an activist and community builder, Louis is involved in many facets of the Neskonlith band as well as non-profit organizations within the wider Shuswap community. Read more about Louis here.

Mark your calendars for March 30, 2019. The Sock Hop Fundraiser takes place at the 5th Avenue Seniors’ Activity Centre. Rockstar DJ Liz Blair will again be spinning discs in her own wonderful style. Watch for ticket sales soon.
