Thanks for subscribing to our newsletter!

It's been a while since we've sent one out and we have a lot of A&E news to share with you...

Building renovations are progressing and there will be increased activity around our storefront over the next several weeks. Be assured that we will remain open during this period although you may need to use the northwest door rather than our main doors. We're getting excited about unveiling our new look in the near future!

HEADS UP: Our Friday evening music lineup has changed in order to accommodate more local talent. Due to popular demand, the first and third Fridays of each month are now Open Mic Cabaret evenings.

If you haven't yet attended one, they're a lot of fun! It's a chance to check out of our community's "unsung" talent. You'll be surprised by what you hear and see. If you think you'd like to participate as a performer, check out our Facebook Open Mic page for further details.

Please note: there is a $5 cover charge for both audience and performers.

Featured Performers:

Our comfortable little venue continues to attract new performers as well as returning favourites:

Feb 08: Sue Hansen is the antidote to a long hard week. Kick back, lighten up and sing along to Sue's incredibly catchy song collection! Come early - Sue is one of our more popular performers. No cover - tips appreciated.

Feb 22: Kel Kelly may live just "up the road a piece" in Merville but his songs reflect a global perspective. Thoughtful, funny and open-hearted, Kel's music is universal by nature: trying to make sense of this complex and beautiful pale blue dot we all call home. No cover - tips appreciated.

Mar 08: Daniel Cook & The Radiators are an original West Coast roots group inspired by Daniel Cook's well-crafted song writing, these contagious melodies and timeless stories are blended into a tasty mix of indie-folk, funk and country. No cover - tips appreciated.

Mar 22: Kevin Barr is a Juno-nominated musician from the Yukon who plays a mix of traditional and original bluegrass and country songs with love and an infectious enthusiasm that can convert even the most die-hard country music haters - who are, after all just folks who haven't yet been exposed to the good stuff. Kevin is the good stuff. No cover - tips appreciated.

Mar 29: John Gogo is an island boy - there's no doubt about that. From his rough and tumble days as a chokerman in the logging industry to his tenure in Port Hardy where he cemented kinships with First Nations artists, John's evocative music is a reflection of all that we were and are. His love and enthusiasm for this place and its many peoples is what makes his music come alive. No cover - tips appreciated.

April 12: Robbie Hancock

Robbie is a singer/songwriter, a composer/producer, and an international touring artist with numerous film and documentary songwriting/composing credits. He's been performing live for over 20 years and has played at Disney World, Busch Gardens, and numerous festivals and showcases, including Nashville and Los Angeles. Robbie runs fundraiser events for homeless teens and has brought awareness and raised funds through local music communities every year since 2009. He is also passionate about paying it forward as much as possible to up-and-coming songwriters and artists through mentoring, workshops, and events. No cover - tips appreciated.

Toronto's Jon Brooks is a brilliantly gifted songwriter and guitarist who traverses the continents, playing mostly small rooms and clubs and gathering fiercely loyal fans wherever he plays. And for good reason: while his songs are not easy listening they're masterfully composed and performed, and tell stories of our strengths and frailties, drawing on both the darkness and light that dwell within us all. Such songs and stories are best shared and appreciated in an intimate venue such as BBVE.

“An hour of pop music could take you away from your life and make you happy for a bit, but when the show is over, everyone goes home alone,” said Brooks. “I write music that takes people on a journey and asks them to look at themselves, so when everyone goes home, they have the feeling they are not alone in the world.”

Recommended listening: "Mercy", "Gun Dealer" and what may be one of the longest titled songs ever: "If We Keep What's Within Us What's Within Us Will Kill Us But If We Give What's Within Us What's Within Us Will Save Us".

Jon is touring in support of his latest album,
No One Travels Alone, and will be joined by trusted sideman Neil Cruickshank when they play BBVE on Thursday March 28th at 7:30pm, doors at 7pm. Tickets are $20 in advance.

Native Edmontonian Scott Cook has managed to distill the stories collected over eleven years touring across Canada, the USA, Europe, Asia, Australia and elsewhere into straight-talking, keenly observant verse. Road-worn, painfully honest, and deeply human, his tunes weave threads of folk, roots, blues, soul and country over spacious finger-style guitar and clawhammer banjo arrangements. His fourth release, One More Time Around, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, and its opening track "Pass It Along" won the Folk and Acoustic category in the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest, with UK magazine Maverick Country naming him "one of Canada's most inspiring and imaginative storytellers".

In 2015 he put together a seven-piece honky-tonk band for his fifth studio album, Scott Cook and the Long Weekends Go Long, and in 2017 he released his sixth album Further Down the Line, earning his second Canadian Folk Music Award nomination, for English Songwriter of the Year. Scott averages over 150 shows and a dozen festivals every year and hard miles notwithstanding, he still believes that songs can change your life, and your life can change the world.

Recommended listening: "Pass It Along", "Fellas Get Out The Way" and "Further Down The Line".

Scott and his band, the Second Chances, play BBVE on Thursday April 18th at 7:30pm, doors at 7pm. Tickets are $20 in advance.
Inspired by the dramatic landscapes around her, Lisa Riehl has translated her passion for hiking, surfing and her love of nature to canvas.

"Vancouver Island is an amazingly beautiful place with gorgeous scenery all around - mountains, ocean & forests! You can drive for only 15 minutes and feel like you're in the middle of nowhere."

Lisa goes almost everywhere with her camera (usually hiking with her dog Lucy) and is always taking photos of scenes that inspire her. Once home in her studio, she uses these photos as references for her brightly coloured and textured acrylic paintings.

Lisa's show and sale will be featured in The Gallery through to March 14th. We also have a selection of her art cards for sale.
