Did you enjoy that two day preview of spring?  We certainly did, even though there are sheets of ice remaining after the rain fell on the snow.  Unfortunately, Gene did not get the greens cut until mid-afternoon Thursday, so the wind was already bringing back the cold weather when I started washing them at the outside tub.  We check the weather multiple times a day, trying to schedule picking and washing for the warmest days.  On Monday, I had to wash the spinach in the laundry tub, because it was too cold outside to do anything.  We realigned our storage rooms late this fall, turning off the refrigeration compressor, raising the temperature in one, so that we could store the winter squash in it.  Hauling all that squash downstairs into the basement, only to bring it back up again, is just too heavy a job for us anymore.  The sweet potatoes, which store longer under the correct conditions, are all in the basement.  We bring them back up a bushel or so at a time, washing them for sale.  Using this one room in the barn as a warm room saves us from bringing sweet potatoes, easily damaged by temperatures below 40 degrees, from the barn into the house between market days.  Winter marketing the way we do it, outside in all sorts of temperatures and weather conditions, requires adaptation and flexibility.  By utilizing our coolers as insulated carriers for tender vegetables, and protecting and covering everything from wind and below freezing chill, we manage to bring you FRESH and LOCAL products year round.  So don't be shy about asking for what you don't see;  it is probably in a chest, warm and snug.  There are market days our vegetables are warmer outside than we are!
The Freight Station Farmers Market is open Tuesdays, and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
