• Marzieh Hashemi (Melanie Franklin) is an American citizen and international journalist who was arrested and detained on January 13, 2019 without charge and was transferred to a prison in Washington DC under the controversial Material Witness Law.

• She was forced to survive on water and bread since she was only served meals which did not accommodate her dietary restriction

• Her basic freedoms were violated such as as the right to keep her religious head covering on at all times, right for privacy, and the right to be treated as innocent until proven guilty

• Marzieh was finally released on January 23, 2019 after 10 days of imprisonment and grueling interrogations of grand jury and no charges were raised.
